I'm trying to set up my new Asus P4PE and it refuses to recognize my Western Digital 1200JB. It is set up as master on the primary IDE. The drive is good as it works in my other system. Also, when I try to use it, the computer then can no longer see the CD drive that I have set up as master on the secondary IDE. I've tried different combinations with no luck. I'd appreciate any help you guys could provide.

Set the jumper to "Neutral" position on WD and it will detect fine (assuming you have nothing else on the primary channel)

Which is the "neutral" position? I see 2CS, Master, Slave, and two jumper positions with no markings. Also, I was hoping to have a drive attached on the primary channel. I'll try changing the jumper. Thanks.

Short the jumper that has no markings on the drive's PCB.

From the POWER slot for the drive, short the 4th bank of jumper counting left while holding the drive with the PCB side down. Hope this helps.

I managed to get the drive to work as a single drive, but it does not want to work as a master with a second drive attached. I can get by with this for now. Thanks for all the help.

Use ATA 100 cable and set both drives at C/S (Cable Select.) Black will be Master and Gray the Slave. For booting, in the P4PE BIOS you must select which of the two will be the boot drive. It can be either. I have two P4PE systems, and it took me a whilew to figure this out. Previous boot sequences in earlier Asus boards was more like AUTO. But the P4PE has to be specific. I guess this may be due to the RAID/SATA on board.

As for the CD ROM drive, you can also set it to C/S and use a ATA 100 cable.

I just flashed both BIOSes to 1002 from 1001. I used the Asus Update utility right from Windows - piece of cake!
