Asus P4P800E and SATA HD's

I have an asus P4P800E Deluxe and recently acquired a WD 36GB Raptor 10k rpm sata HD. The board's BIOS is currently version 1004 which is up to date.

Here's the problem:

When I plug the hard drive's data cable into the SATA IDE slot on the MB the bios reports there is no HD installed at POST. This DOES NOT stop me from loading into windows and things appear to work fine except for a wierd quirck which I will get to. This happens regardless of whether I have IDE or RAID selected in the BIOS. In winXP (service pack 2) I've installed all the appropriate drivers. However, each time windows starts up it goes through the 'new hardware detected' routine for the Promise SATA150 contoller. No matter what, you cannot select drivers that work. The drivers supplied on the ASUS CD do not properly install, nor has anything off the internet worked. Every time the computer reboots it goes through the new hardware detected routine.

Now, on a whim i instead plugged the HD onto the primary RAID slot, not the SATA IDE slot. Doing this appears to solve the new hardware thing in windows. It only works when IDE is selected in the BIOS even though the HD is plugged into the RAID cable plug. Sure, this appears to work, but any ideas on why it wont work otherwise? Anyone else have similar issues?

Thanks

I'd try d'loading the latest chipset drivers from Intel. Then follow their installation instructions, specifically their instructions for installing the chipset drivers AFTER Windows has been installed - they have you go to Device Mgr., expand on System Devices, and individually update the driver for items in the expanded list of devices.
