Well, the USB doesn't get powered up until it's in Windows i believe... as for the PS/2 the PS/2 connector could be malfunctioning, i've seen that a couple of times.

Is your keyboard getting powered to it even on bootup, before it actually loads into window?

Sometimes it takes my formats up to 3-5 minutes after I get to the login screen to install/detect the keyboard if I've had a major hardware change recently... try waiting it out before you do anything drastic. You can also try hitting the bios and setting it to load the keyboard and mouse drivers itself rather than let the OS do it.

This is a new system, so no windows installed yet. I can't even enter into the bios. Im positive the keyboard works, and ive also put in another keyboard.

Possible bad PS/2 port. I am not sure if USB keyboard needs to be enabled in the bios before a USB keyboard will work. Best suggestion is to reset the BIOS.

Cleared CMOS 4 times so far. I hope its not a bad ps/2 port.

Sounds like the Super IO is malfunctioning. Not good. Did you just reset bios with the jumper or did you pull the battery out completely? You dont by any chance have the Keyboard connected to the wrong PS2 port? Maybe board is shorting to case somewhere at the IO? I guess you could try pulling the board out and running it outside case. Might as well give that a shot since you may be RMA anyway.

Sorry, I should have explained. The board is out right now...with just bare parts. Ram, cpu, board, vid card...nothing else. I am using a usb-ps/2 adapter. I lost the purple one(for keyboards) and im using the green mouse ps/2 adapter...I assumed there was not a difference. I reset the bios each time with the works...battery out, 10 seconds, etc.

I dont know if you can use the PS2 adaptor for a mouse with the keyboard. Im thinking they are pinned differently. I have the same board running outside case right now and its having no problems like this. I would suggest trying a real PS2 board or proper adaptor before RMA. Legacy USB support may not be enabled in bios thus no USB boot support

Good luck.. :D If you can afford it I would get a PS2 Keyboard. Takes a lot of pain out of diagnostics sometimes.

Is the computer actually booting up? At what point does it stop posting?

Your numlock, capslock, scroll lock lflash when you turn the computer on? Then they go off try pressing the caps lock key or any of them. If the indicator light goes on you got
power to the keyboard. PS/2 mouses and keyboards use the same pinout. Try plugging the keyboard into both PS/2 ports.

If it wont post at all how do you know if the keyboard is not working. Nothing will work if your ram or processor are dead will it? If you are using multiple sticks of ram try one at a time, and if you are using PC3500 try a stick of PC2100 if you have one by itself just to try to get a post.

i have 2 mobos sitting next to each other, intel & asus, a 2.8c & 3.0c, pc2100, pc3000, pc4000, ati pci, gf4 agp, ati agp vid cards. After switching out this and that for a long time i brought it down to the keyboard.

Good grief, you have enough hardware to eliminate just about everything. LOL Well sounds like a bad board doesnt it?

ya, i cant seem to figure it out. Thanks for the help, pipe up if you think of any more suggestions..i appreciate them. Thats how I narrowed it down to the keyboard w/peoples suggestions. Ive tried almost 20-30 different things, but its worth it to isolate the problem.

THAT'S your problem. There is a difference. Get the right one and you should be good to go.
