Asus P4P800 DLX and Ram?

I'm considering buying the Asus P4P800 DLX and a 2.8C chip. Along with that, i want to pick up 512mb of ram.

My question is, which ram do i need really? Im looking to get 3200 DDR 400 ram to get it to run dual channel, yet i dont really want to spend an arm and a leg for it.

I don't really care to overclock, and probably wont.

Do i need the high performance Corsair/OCZ type stuff to actually make it run dual channel? I know to get the best performance, i should get the good stuff, yet i really dont want to keep making the price add up on this thing. If i could get cheap stuff, i probably would, yet i dont want to sacrifice speed TOO much.

I'll probably just grab this stuff..... would this be good?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Look at the Anandtech <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.html?i=1828">
865PE & 875P Memory Guide</a> if you haven't done so already. If you are not planning to overclock or brag about highest speeds, I don't think it is necessary to spend so much ($200 for 2 x 256MB) on memory. You should be able to get away with using memory from Crucial for your rig. It should cost as much or even less for 1GB, and half as much for 512MB.

Look at http://www.aselabs.com/articles.php?id=82 and http://www.envynews.com/review.php?ID=482 for reviews on the Crucial 2 x 256MB PC 3200 RAM. There was also another site which had reviewed Crucial memory for overclocking and given it a good review. Unfortunately, I don't remember which site it was on. If I locate the article, I will post the link here later.

I bought 2 512MB Kingston HyperX PC3500 RAM from Best Buy when it was on sale for $107 per stick. Seems to be running OK so far! However, that may be overkill for what you are interested in.

Hope that helps!

I see everyone saying that you need two identical sticks to get dual channel running. Does this mean if i pick up two sticks, that say werent made at the same time, yet are the same brand and everything else, that dual channel wont work?

I can save myself some money if i pick up some OEM stuff, which is what im looking to do. Its good ram, my bro has some, and no problems, i just want to make sure about dual channel.

I have the P4P800 DLX and I'm using Apacer 2x512 from NewEgg with no problem (2.4C CPU). I went to the Asus site and picked the memory from their approved list. Some of the memory does not work well with the dual channel, so I played it safe and went with memory from the list. The list is @
Asus
List is at bottom on page.

Unofrtunately that list doesn't include most of the 512 MB modules that newegg sells :(

For example the Apacer newegg sells is a slightly different part number than the modules Asus tested. The Crucial 512's are also untested, though the crucial.com website says they will work.

I was told that the last three digits of the part number is the mfg batch number. The first 7 digits are the important numbers. The two memory sticks that I ordered had the same batch number. If you lhave a question, email Asus through their customer service program and ask them. I had a question about the Asus video card for my board and they were prompt with and answer. Good Luck

I don't think matching the batch number is that important for dual channel, unless you are trying to push really fast timings. No two sticks are perfectly physically identical anyway.

As long as both sticks of RAM are the same model I doubt you would have any problems. If you should encounter any, test each stick individually at various speeds/timings with memtest86, I've noticed and personally experienced quite a bit of bad memory going around as the speeds keep increasing.
