Wife's computer, w/ above MB and now has a 2.6 cpu not working.

MB bios is rev 2.0

Only cpu available at Newegg for socket 478 is the 3.0 Prescott (OEM) w/ 1mb cache.

Can I use the Prescott 3.0, just pop it in, and do no bios flash? I don't want to have to flash the bios. And, since it is OEM w/ no HSF...what to get for HSF....easiest to install...

Thx so much, guys... I need info ASAP, as my wife is on me to get this fixed...

www.heatware.com
geeks.com has a northwood 3ghz chip for 42.50

starmicro.net has a 3.2ghz for $52.00

a 3ghz for $36

a 3.4ghz prescott for $145

according to Asus's website, no bios flash is needed for any northwood chip, for a prescott you need bios 1017 or newer, for an extreme edition chip 1021 or newer

So, Northwood is the way to go, for no BIOS flash...

What "HSF" would be good for this socket 478 cpu? (easy to install..) Or, if it's not "OEM", then it will have a HSF on it already...correct?

Thx

geeks.com is always a good place to pick up an older P4 CPU. I bought some 2.8Ghz Northwoods for $30 or so each a while back. One of them is OCed to 3.2Ghz at stock voltage in a Biostar P4-M900 mobo.

For cooling, I picked up some TR2-M12 heatsinks from Microcenter for $20 each. They are really nice, lots of copper. Supposed to handle up to a theoretical 3.6Ghz Prescott.

A little bit more expensive at NewEgg, $37 shipped.

Here's a 2.8C for $19, and at the bottom of the page is an Intel OEM heatsink for it, for an extra $10. You really can't do any better than that.

Sorry, but is that a Northwood or a Prescott cpu?

If it's a Northwood, I won't have to flash the Bios on the Asus P4P800 Deluxe MB... :)
