Originally had a Aopen motherboard with 2 256MB Registered SDRAM.
Motherboard has 3 DIMM sockets. Wanted to add an additional 256MB
of RAM, so I purchased a 256MB Kingston Value RAM - didn't work of
course, because non-registered memory doesn't mix well with registered
memory - now I know.

So, I returned it and purchased a Kingston 256MB ECC Registered SDRAM.
This memory works fine, but the motherboard only sees it as a 128MB
module. Tried putting it in by itself - same thing, sees it as 128MB.

So, I figured I'd just replace the motherboard since I wanted to go
to 1GB anyway. So, I pick up an ASUS P3B-F, install the memory, plus
an additional Kingston 256MB ECC Registered SDRAM and same thing -
it only sees the Kingston modules as 128MB each (now total of 768MB).

I noticed that the existing DIMMs have 18 chips per side. It looks
like 9 at first glance, but they are on the DIMM in stacks of 2.
The Kingston modules have only 9 chips per side (no stacks), thus
seem to be higher capacity chips.

In any case, I really need to add another 512MB of Registered SDRAM to
this board. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Help! :)

You cannot use registered memory with the Asus P3B-F. You can add more memory, but it can't be registered.

I suggest you consider buying some of the cheap 256mb memory some people are offering in FS/T.

Why can't I used Registered memory on the P3B-F? It seems to be working fine, especially the 2 original DIMMs.

The first two probably worked because the two original DIMMs were most likely not registered SDRAM. AFAIK, the BX chipset does not work with registered memory. I remember experiencing the same problem - my registered 256mb DIMMs would only show up as 128mb on my P3B-F. I tried them out on my roommate's Abit BP6 and we got the same results.
