ASUS P2B - how do I tell what revision?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do I
tell what revision I have?

Right now I have a PII 400. I just got a Geforce2 and my processor seems to be holding me back. So I'm trying to figure out what will give me the best upgrade for the least amount of work - meaning I'd like to keep this motherboard so I don't have to do a complete reload of Windows and all my apps.

thanks.

http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Techref/cpu/coppermine/index.html

You will need R1.12/1011 or higher to be able to use a coppermine with it (trust me I tried with my R1.02.)

There is a sticker on the left hand side of the board on the last ISA slot (might have to take it out of your case to see.)

You should be able to use any non-coppermine PIII with any revision of the board, or any of the mendicino-core celerons.

It's printed between the PCI slots on most of the boards.

By the way, it may work with the 1.02, as long as you've upgraded the BIOS. You just have to run a high voltage. (1.8, since the voltage regulator on those boards won't go lower. If you set it to the default - ie. something like 1.6, you'll get nada.) It does work with more normal voltages (below 1.8) on newer pre-1.12 boards (like my 1.10). However, on mine I can only set 0.1 V increments (ie. 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, etc.). Note that the 1.02 is the earliest board that it's confirmed to work with... I don't know if all the 1.02 boards are the same. Try 1.8 V and see what happens. (You won't fry the chip if you're worried.)

I have a P2B 1.02 board and have ordered an FC-PGA p3-700

Which slot convertor should I use? Will they all let me specify the voltage? Are there any issues with running 1.8v? Will I need to get a fan better than the retail one?

Just get one which does FC-PGA and which has voltage jumpers. I run 1.8 V. Just make sure your cooling is good. Did you buy a retail PIII-700? Because that's the only way you'll get the retail fan. The OEM chips do not come with a fan.

People seem to like the MSI slockets. I use an Abit and it works fine too, although I'm not a big fan of Abit in general. In truth the Asus are the only ones guaranteed on that mobo, but since your mobo doesn't officially support Cumine the point is moot. Plus, some people have had problems with the Asus. Do not get a generic one.

One more thing, will I be able to run a 112mhz bus with a slot converter?

Right now I have a P2B 1.02, running 3.5x112... I wanna run 7.0 x 112 cuz my VC and RAM can't handle 133mhz, the only higher available bus speed...

All the slot converters I've seen just show 66/100/133... does this mean I can't overclock unless I go 133?

Asus P2B 1.10
Abit Slotket !!!
Celeron 533A running at (almost) 900 = 8x112, at 1.8 V.

Set the slotket on auto, and use the motherboard to select the FSB speed.

I'm not sure about the hyphenated ones but the "regular" P2B only has 66, 75, 83, 100, 103, 112 and 133... I believe 133 was the undocumented one... Using SoftFSB confirmed that these were the only ones that existed, at least on my board...

Nope. The later P2B boards have tons more FSB settings, but mine are all documented. I have 66, 75, 83, 100, 103, 105, 110, 112, 115, 120, 124, 133, 140, 150, and a couple of other ones.

There are a couple of the older P2B variants with undocumented settings, but I can't remember the link.

Look around the Asus website and look for a manual for the P2B and you'll see they have an updated version with all FSB settings...

I tried them on my board and of course they didn't work because I have Rev. 1.02
