ok im updating a friends HD and ive had it for about 3 weeks and im just getting around to it now they need it back and im rushing to do it when i attach the 80gig to the primary ide it doesnt detect it, i think i may have messed with something in the BIOS what are my options here i need to have this done by noon Tuesday

update the bios to the latest you can find.

Even then I think you're asking a lot for an old BX board to detect a 80 gig hd.

I've been doing some research to figure out what the largest HD I can put into my P3B-F is, and I think you're limited like me. The on-board controller is UDMA/33, and I believe the addressing is 13h (<- ?). So, you're limited to 32 GB size, in effect. First, I'm not the level of trouble shooter that you typically have on these boards, and my research on this subject is not exhaustive. I run a SCSI controller now so I'm not too up on IDE limitations. But after researching on the net for about 30-45 minutes last night, that was the conclusion I came to. No one answered my thread asking this question in General Hardware D: .

Most rigs I saw in my research still running on BX boards ran Promise controllers. I'm simply planning to upgrade my MB in the very near future. I'm finding this board more and more restrictive with each passing day. I don't think it will be Asus this time. They used to have great tech support, now it's scary bad.

Whoops, I was typing when I saw that... I have the 1008.004 Bios installed, so I can run an 80 GB drive!?! Will I have to use the overlay software to get it to read the whole volume? This could be great gnus for me and my P3B 😉 .

EDIT: Exclamation points added.

The latest BIOS for the P2B-F is Version 1014 Beta 003, and supports drives up to 128GB. The P2B series of boards has had support for drives larger than 64GB (but less than 128GB) since around BIOS version 1011.

Hmmm....my P3B-F can detect my 120gb WD SE's (I had 2 of 'em running on the secondary channel) I was using the latest official bios i believe. I don't use the board anymore though.

There is no hardware limitation for any ATA/IDE controllers up to ~ 128GB that a BIOS enhancement cannot work-around. At ~ 128GB and beyond, it becomes a hardware limitation of older IDE controllers.
