Asus P2B (BX) plus Western Digital 120 GB drive = no worky.

I have an Asus P2B with 34 GXP and 75 GXP on a Promise ATA66 card. I also have a Pioneer DVD-ROM drive on device 1 on the ATA33 controller. With the WD 120 GB drive (2 MB cache) installed by itself on device 0 = no worky. It doesn't matter if I set it as master or cable select. It also doesn't work on device 1 by itself.

However, it seems to work fine installed into a Firewire enclosure in Windows XP and on my Mac, so it's not defective.

The mobo is BIOS 1012 and the revision is 1.10. BIOS 1012 is fairly recent.

I assume that ATA33 can handle 120 MB right? The FAQ suggests that it's only until you go to drives at 137 GB when you need to upgrade to ATA133. I asked four sales guys in the computer store and none had a clue.

EDIT:

Just found an ATA selector software for the drive, so I'll give that a shot.

Make sure the BIOS is updated to the most recent one. Some board's BIOS's don't like drives larger than 40 GB unless it's the most recent one.

Thanks, but 1012 is either the most recent or the second most recent (I'm running Celeron Coppermine), and I have both a 45 GB IBM 75GXP and a 60 GB IBM 60GXP running fine. The 60 GB drive is running on the ATA33 (where the WD drive was installed).

I tried running that ATA selection program, but its useless because you have to be able to boot to DOS or run it from the command prompt. However I can't boot at all with the drive installed.

I really only wanted to get access to it so that I could format the drive in DOS as FAT32, since I want to use it in Firewire enclosure with both the Mac and PC. Win XP only allows NTFS with drives that large, but will work if formatted with something else to FAT32. I guess I'll have to use Partition Magic or something.

if the WD hdd is by itself on the channel then completely remove the jumper!
