Just wondering if someone can answer a question I have:

With GPU power requirements seemingly on the uprise with these small Video card form factors what is to stop ATI or NVidia from installing heatsinks directly on top of a naked GPU? (Apple does this already with their twelve core Mac Pros).

What's to stop them? Nothing. In fact that's the way they used to do it (and AMD still does it). The problem is that it's problematic for their partners because it means their partners are getting an exposed chip that's easier to damage. The heatspreader makes it easier for the partners to assemble their cards because they no longer need to worry about cracking the core during assembly or in shipping.

Looking at CPUs would be a good example. Chips used to be topped with ceramic, then they were encased in a kind of heatspreader (Slot1/A), then they were flipped to expose the die to the surface (flip-chip design), and finally they were capped with the modern heatspreader.

^Yep ATI still does this. My 4870 went under the waterblock and it did not have a heatspreader on it.
