Asus Nvidia GTA660Ti DirectCU II OC or VTX3D AMD HD 7870 Black Boost Edition?

Hi Guys,

Long-time lurker and used this site many-a-time for great research. However I can't find a thread specifically comparing these 2 cards.

Basically I'm doing my first new-build in 4yrs and have sorted the specs apart from a dilemma between 2 great graphics cards. Have always had Nvidia cards, but I'm no fanboy and simply want the best bang for my buck!

The 2 options I've whittled it down to are either:
1. VTX3D HD 7870 Black Boost Edition 2048MB (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-013-VX) - £155.99 (~$240)
or
2. Asus GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II OC (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-...pu-967mhz-boost-1058mhz-cores-1344-2x-dl-dvi-) - £179.59 (~$277)

What do you think I should go for, is there really £25/$40 speed/power difference between these cards?

Thanks in advance for any advice

660Ti is faster, so you can go for it or the Tahiti LE.

OP you have a very good PC. i suggest a HD 7950 as there are some crazy deals going around. the HD 7950 is a much faster card. the GTX 660 Ti starts falls badly behind at 4x MSAA or SSAA as the missing 8 ROPs and 64 bit memory controller affect performance and OC scaling.

for 200 - 210 pounds the HD 7950 with massive bandwidth and 3GB VRAM is a much better card

VTX Radeon HD 7950 X-edition - £200

Sapphire HD 7950 - £210

Gigabyte HD 7950 - £210

my vote goes to the Gigabyte. 3 yr warranty. good cooler. the current models come with a 1 Ghz boost. locked voltage. but 1.1 - 1.15 Ghz at stock voltage is quite easy.

here is a user giving feedback on ocn

here is a HD 7950(1150 mhz) vs GTX 660 Ti (1346 mhz) comparison

Crysis 3 with High settings 4x SMAA is 15% faster on HD 7950. Farcry 3 with Ultra 4x MSAA is 11% faster on HD 7950. Tombraider with Ultra FXAA Tress FX is 23% faster on HD 7950.

Hi, thanks for all the tips guys. Some people on another forum have thrown in another alternative... I can get an Asus GTX670 NVIDIA DirectCU II Overclocked for £189. What are peoples thoughts on that compared with a 7950?

Thanks again!

I don't think the 7870 is the best bang for the buck, seeing how the prices of 7950 have come down and now you also have the 670 to consider. Which to get between the 7950 and the 670 may come down to whether you like to overclock yourself (7950) or let the card do it for you (670), and whether the particular card you get has a nice cooler. E.g., a cheapo cooler on one card would push me toward the other card that had a better cooler.

OP between HD 7950 or GTX 670 its a personal preference question. the Gigabyte HD 7950(1 ghz) would trade blows with a GTX 670 OC at 1.1 - 1.15 ghz. HD 7950 at average overclocks of 1.15 Ghz would trade blows with a GTX 670 OC at 1.3 Ghz. once the HD 7950 starts hitting 1200+ Mhz clocks the HD 7950 is on average faster winning more than losing.

my vote is for the HD 7950. extra VRAM and bandwidth which proves its worth in bandwidth demanding scenarios like SSAA. better compute performance. the next gen consoles have 8GB RAM and next gen console to PC ports are going to push VRAM requirements easily over 2GB.

I think with the budget I've got this is what I'm going to go for: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-...-gddr5-gpu-915mhz-boost-980mhz-cores-1344-2xd I'm not intending to OC my own graphics card so this sits well I feel between price and performance.
