Asus n61jq wireless issues

This notebook as a Atheros ar9285 wifi-n card @ 2.4GHz. With the latest windows 7 driver for the card I can not connect to a wifi-n ap. If I change it to G it connects fine but at 150Mbps so there has to be some type of setting I can change if it can connect at higher then 54Mbps correct? I am at a loss at what to do.
