ASUS motherboards, what does "auto" actually mean?

I have an ASUS H87I-PLUS. In many of the advanced options such as C-States for example, there are 3 settings, enabled, disabled or auto.

What exactly does auto mean and how does it work differently from enabled or disabled?

The way I see it is
Enable - always on even if not supported
Disabled - always off even if supported
Auto - will turn it on if supported or stays off if not supported

That is how I have always assumed it was.

Not sure whether it is right or wrong, but I interpret Auto as permission for the BIOS to determine the best setting and use it. Also it gives permission to change how it is used depending on other factors such as CPU load.

right on.for ex.if you leave the ram on auto.on some board the default is 1333.so if you put 1600 ram you will have to select manual.

Auto means the BIOS controls it in relation to predetermined settings for other parts of the BIOS settings. So for example if you choose some extreme gamer OC setting in another place of the BIOS, it might affect this one.
