Asus motherboard powers up, but no video signal

Hello,

I am installing this motherboard for the first time. I hooked up everything accordingly, it powers on, but there is no video signal.

I noticed however, that my power supply doesn't have an extra 4 pin ATX power connector for the 4 pin connection on the motherboard. The one 4 pin ATX power connector (that comes with the power supply) is connected to the larger 24pin power (along with a 20 pin power connector).

If you can read my confusing explanation, my question is that the reason why there is no video signal? Because the 4 pin ATX connector is not plugged in? Or does not have anything to do with the video signal?

Sorry for the confusing explanation! The motherboard is an Asus M5A78L-M LX

Many Thanks!

Yes, the 4-pin connector near the cpu needs to be plugged in as well. Are you sure your psu doesn't have one? (it must be old if it doesn't have one, in which case it's a bit strange it does have a 24-pin main connector, since old motherboards that don't have a 4-pin ATX connector usually only need a 20-pin main connector as well, but I might be mistaken about this).

Hey Coffeejunkee,

Its been a while since I have put together a computer, and I was a bit surprised at first two, the PSU has a 4 put ATX connector, but it comes with a 20 pin power connector and the motherboard requires a 24 pin connector. So the PSU is designed somehow to have the 4 pin connector "clip on" to the 20 pin connector to make it a 24 pin connector.

Now I'm one 4 pin ATX connector short for the 12 Volt power input! Is this how most PSU are these days? Or only cheap ones?

The 20+4 pin main connector is normal on psu's nowadays. It's so they can power older motherboards with 20-pin main connectors as well.

But which psu do you have? I think pretty much every current psu has a 4-pin ATX connection, certainly the decent ones.

Your missing 4 pin connector is most likely hiding as a 8 pin connector. Might be solid or dual 4 pins. If it's a solid 8 pin you may be able to use it if there is nothing in the way on your MB....Pretty sure all current power supplies are equiped with the connector.

You need to tell us which PSU you have, too. Most modern PSUs will have a 20+4 connector for the motherboard power, and then a separate 4-pin 12V connector.

The PSU's installation instruction sheet (and MB installation guide) will tell you what you need to know. Sounds like you actually have everything necessary, but just need to connect things up correctly.
