As the title says, my trusty RIVE has gone away up in a spark n puff of smoke.
http://s335.photobucket.com/user/ja...mputer hardware/DSC00010_zpsdytuhby8.jpg.html

No over clock, all energy features were on. The CPU was defaulted at 3800, PSU G2 1300W EVGA. Was watching netfilx next thing I know I see a bright light like you see right before you hear the BOOM. Took me 3 seconds to smell the smell, hit the power off button on the back of the PSU. But sadly the damage was done, I assume it's related to the Vregs as nothing was plugged into the fan header. The stand off has been there, and the unit is on a sheet of plexiglass.
I have a X79 which i got with bent pins, gonna try to see if my PSU, memory, CPU are all good.
ASUS will not warranty, as the purchase date was 12 of 2011. $500 board puff GONE!!

It was warrantied one time, though it was like pulling teeth......Making me rethink my future in computing altogether. It is out of warranty, of course they blame me. Sent me a message saying a repair would be around$320 before even seeing the board?

Do I really wanna buy X99..............................:colbert:

You know you do... ;)

Bad deal on the Asus board. I have a used Asus Z68 board I got for my 2nd 2500K, it's nice but it's not All That and a bag of chips and after hearing your experience, I probably won't buy another.

I don't see how they could 'fix' your board with any amount of certainty that it would continue to work. I'm sure the repair wouldn't carry much of a warranty, if any, so I wouldn't even consider it. Maybe another used board...?

EDIT: After looking at your signature links, you HAVE OC'd your board, rather impressively it appears. Nothing is free... it looks like the bill came due.

Yeah,
Spot on, the price we pay! I have a P9X79 I got for cheap with a few bent pins, so she will live to scream another day. Pretty sure all the parts are good as it was running when I pulled the plug, but I did try to power it on after wards? The board only got to the first lights then started over so, here's to hopping!!!
Definitely not worth trying to fix it, but with all its parts might be worth something to someone(OverClock panel, etc).
It was bought December of 2011, I'm considering buying a case now lol! I'll post back when I get the other one running, soon!!

Ditto. I don't care what your OC was, a premium board like that should have handled it. You had a bum unit no doubt, it just took awhile for that to come to light.

Heck my ECS K7S5A lasted longer than that.

I have a P9X79 sitting in a closet. Been sitting there for about 2 years. Sell it to ya for $35 if you want one without any bent pins. I don't need it.

Well I was messing with the PCB just now, and there is a thin wire(looks like it out lines the board)I'm pretty sure its what I saw light up so bright. The PCB is burned right through and the board is literally falling apart in that small place, about and half inch wide. the board is extra well done. My apartment stinks of burnt PCB lol!
Adam Thank You!! PM'ED

And just to clarify I'm not playing the blame game, I take full responsibility and do request a MOD to change the name of this thread to "I blow up my RIVE board". As I am a big boy, and this board did bring me much good over clocking in the past, I in no way want offend anyone or company and do Apologize to Asus for the title!!!

You want ASUS horror stories? Just head over to the HardForums.
Like the most recent guy who got dicked around with for over 6 months (busted vid card).

You know I got 2 780 TI DC II OC, I run open bench and the fan blade break easily. They wanted me to RMA the Cards, I was like Oh hell no, I put Intel cooler fans on them working fine lol!

This same board was RMA'D before, when they sent it back i had issue's and I knew something was amiss. I looked at the board closely, the board had the corner crunched in transit. They didn't wanna fix that either, but finally after 6 months of waiting they did. Here's a picture of it....

Bummer.

That worries me about my RIVE:| I haven't done any serious OCing to it but was going to start pushing it this year.

OTOH, I had good service on my RIVE during warranty period (3 month old)

But, I have heard the MB and GPU service centers are different for ASUS and that the GPU service center sucks.

Huh? Didn't you say you were not overclocking it? You only fault was not reaching for the switch faster, but nobody can seriously blame you for not acting fast enough. Your PC was stock, you did not blow up your board, Asus did.

I wasn't at the time, I just don't blame the board as it was sitting open. All you need is one miss placed paper clip to land on it and BOOM!
It was a dead short what ever caused it, just can't pin point what caused it..........

If it's working, you probably blew the circuit to the fan header, and nothing critical. I did that on a P35-DQ6 many years ago, and it still clocked the Q6600 like a champ afterward.

Its toast, the burn went right through the PCB. This is a P9X79 board I got with bent pins, gonna flee bay the RIVE. I wish it still did work, I'm just not gonna try it though......

Took four seconds to boot into the bios splash screen, I shut it down right after that. I don't have a 2011 heat sink but I do see your point, I could have used anything(apposed to nothing).
