Asus Maximus or GA-P67A-UD7-B3

I finally managed to buy Radeon 6990 and I don't know why it was so hard to get one. I also currently have two radeons 6950 unlocked and a i5 2500K processor. I installed all of those componets into a Asus P8p67pro motherboard that by the way turned out to be a suboptimal choice for such monstrous graphic configuration but I decided I could live with that. But all of a sudden the motherboard died when I was installing an SSD. So, which board will be better for 6990+2x6950 configuration? Maybe some other suggestions? Don't warry about PSU I've got be quiet 1.2kW.

ps. I developed a slight dislike to asus becasue of that failure. None of the components were overclocked.

I wouldn't splurge on the Maximus unless you're interested in the additional features. Note its dimensions also, and be careful selecting a case to make sure it fits and that you can still manage wiring okay.

At this point, you might actually want to consider Z68 boards also.

Z68? By why? I'm not interested in using iGPU quicksync included. SSD caching sounds like a marketing gimmick, there is no reason to not have it working in other chipsets aside from artificial limitations. Are there any other benefits to z68?

No, I think you've covered them all. 🙂

I looked at that Gigabyte board, and might have gone for it had it had more PCIe slots -- specifically, a 1X or 4X not in between the GPUs. That heat sink for the NF200 blocking a longer card in the 1X slot kind of shot that down for me. But that might not be an issue for you. It was one of the reasons I went with the Maximus, that and that I didn't really want legacy PCI slots, as I didn't have anything that I was ever going to plug into them.
