ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard w/ Radeon 4200 GPU onboard
AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition CPU
I built this PC for a friend (motherboard is open box from Newegg). First, I updated the bios, attempted core unlocks but was not stable. Overclock to 3.6 GHz was fine, and overclocked the GPU from 500 MHz to about 750 MHz (it's supposed to be overclockable to about 1GHz).
There is a problem with the graphics crashing. It will just go black, and seems to do it randomly after several hours of being on. It sometimes happens when the screen saver goes off, sometimes when launching a DirectX app, sometimes just randomly. But sometimes a DirectX app will work fine (like Google Earth). Sometimes it will come back and say that the driver recovered, but sometimes it will stay black until reboot.
I tried different drivers with no success. I lowered the GPU clock back to default, no change. Most recently I have reset the entire bios settings to default. The owner of this PC has not mentioned crashing since then, but I don't know if it is really fixed. I typically talk to them on the weekend, and don't know if the PC has been used much.
I had an RMA issued with Newegg, but with the cost of restock fee and shipping and extra cost for a new retail board instead of open box, I thought I would do some more troubleshooting. At this point, we have decided to use it until it crashes again.
In the meantime, I thought I would come here to see if this is a known issue to anyone. Perhaps someone could point me to a bios setting that could affect this issue.
Help appreciated.
