ASUS M3N78 PRO AND ALTEC LANSING 5.1?

Hi. I recently built a middling system with the ASUS M3N78 PRO motherboard. I have the center/subw, left/right front and left/right rear ports in the back plugged into the same 3 ports in my Altec Lansing speakers.

The ASUS mobo uses Realtek® ALC1200 8 -Channel High Definition Audio CODEC.

Running Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux.

Now I'm sure I am missing something because I do not get anything in the rear speakers. I tried a couple of games and by playing a movie DVD (5.1 selected) via Windows Media Player.

I think (one of) the issue(s) is with Windows. Windows does not recognize anything other than 2 speaker hi-def setup.

I tried the CD that came with the board. I am unable to install the motherboard utilities as the installer hangs. Apparently it does not work with Win 7.

The speakers themselves test out fine on my old Win 98 system.

I'm thinking about trying vista-64 bit drivers with win 7...bad idea?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!
