the supported cpus page shows that as of the latest bios (from late 2008) this board supports phenom1 cpus...
http://support.asus.com/cpusup...t.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

what are the chances of it working with a p2 cpu if i put one in it?
what can go wrong?
how much of a performance hit should i expect on this board compared to am3?

any chance it will outperform a Q6600 in a P35 mobo (I have a 2ghz X2 in my M2N-E board for a fileserver and use Q6600 for gaming machine, i don't mind swapping their roles if it will give a solid enough upgrade).

Head on over to ASUS Forums and check the M2N-E sub-forum. There will be at least a couple posts there by users who have tried it.

well, someone posted the reply to their email to asus asking about p2 support:

the motherboard can't support Phenom 2 cpus, but Phenom cpus, due to the chipset limitation, the motherboard can't support 45nm cpus, please don't use Phenom 2 cpu in your motherboard.

Load of fud and bull to sell more boards. Yes they are in business to sell hardware, but delivering on past promises (like, say, future compatibility) is a part of doing business.

Oh well. I didn't know that my M2N-E supported Phenom IIs...

Now if only we could get Vdimm to go above 1.95V.
