Ive been browsing the forums but haven?t found the answer to my problem. Im new here. First ill start by listing my components. I just bought a barebone system from American pc and it came in yesterday and ive had nothing but problems with it.

New:
-Asus K8V SE Deluxe
-Athlon 64 2800
-Rexpower 450watt powersupply
-new case

Stuff I am just adding to the barebone:
-PNY Verto GeForce FX 5700 LE Optima 128 DDR AGP
-generic floppy drive
-sony dvd drive
-samsung cd RW
-2-3 year old Western Digital 40 gig IDE hard drive
-a 512 stick of PNY 2700 DDR Ram (few months old)
-a 256 stick of generic brand DDR Ram may be 2100 or 2700 DDR Ram (2-3 years old)

Ok my problem is I cant get into windows. I just figured I can unplug my HD from my computer now and put it into the new one. Didn?t format or partition, still has everything on it that I have been using, ie, games, apps? After I start the computer, the bios checks itself, finds the HD, finds the ram, graphics card. All is found during bios check. Then the HD makes a sound, screen goes black for about 5 seconds, then HD starts to spin up again and I am given the choice between Microsoft Windows or Windows XP. The reason I have a choice is cuz I am not running NTFS, just FAT 32 and using a Win 98 boot disk was the only way I could do this. So it sees Windows and XP but windows O/S is not there, just XP. So I choose XP and then I get this blue screen that says:

?A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to protect your computer

If this is the first time you?ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Fun CHKDSK / F to check for hard drive corruption, then restart your computer.

Technical Information

*** Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF894E640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)?

I have run memtest for 7 hrs straight. 3027 cycles and 3719% coverage. No errors. My bios Revision is 1004. I am using the HD I am having problems with in my new system, in my old system now. It works perfectly. No viruses, all data there, nothing is wrong with it. The new system just doesn?t like it. Help, im lost.

When you install new components especially things like motherboards, CPUs you have to do a fresh install of XP you can?t just take the hard drive out and stick it in a new system since it will not have the drivers for the motherboard?. Ect.

you are going to have to reinstall windows (formating first would be best), XP often wont work with motherboard changes (even going from one axp board to another or one a64 board to another, if you staid with the same chipset (ie going from a k8t800 to a k8t800 or nforce2 to nforce2, it might work). You could try getting into safe mode and installing the drivers but reinstalling or formating and installing clean would be a much better choice.

I caught on with the re-installing of windows. So i went ahead and formated the HD and went to reinstall windows. It installed, and then as it was "finalizing installation" i got this blue screen:

"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

told me if it was a fresh install to check my hook ups, and try to reinstall and it gave me some more numbers:

***STOP: 0x0000000A (0x81CAE6A0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804EDCCA"

This was with a copy of Windows XP Pro that is about 2+ years old. I took the HD out and put it back in the old system, reformatted, reinstalled (worked perfectly) and updated XP with Service Pack 2. The only things i put on the HD were XP Pro SP2, and i put the driver disk from Asus on the HD hoping it would associate. I still got nothing.

Try disabling the on board network chip. I have the Asus A8V Deluxe and disabling the onboard nic worked for my system lock up problem. I learned about this from someone running the Asus K8V SE Deluxe. They were having random lock ups and reported that disabling the onboard nic helpd.
BTW, this was on Linux, but if there is a problem with the hardware that shouldn't matter. Some people are reporting that there is an Asus specific udpated for the Linux network driver.

Unfortunately i bought this board because the onboard NIC was included. I didnt want to have to buy a card and it is 10/100/1000 Gigabyte. I want to be able to use this feature. Plus from what i read alot of thos systems that the Nic locked up were to be fixed with the new bios version, and i have 1004. Not the 1003(?) or lower.

I suggest getting a known high-quality brand of power supply and some quality PC3200 memory too. Or at least take out the mystery stick of PC????. Put the 512MB PC2700 module in the blue slot and crank the memory voltage to 2.7 volts in the BIOS if you want to start with something that won't cost money.

The power supply that came with the barebone is an upgraded unit which is 'supposed' to be AMD 64 and Pentium 4 approved. I tried taking out the generic 256 stick of ram this afternoon with no avail. I didnt try to mess with the voltage or Overclocking of anything. I just turned the Promise controller off since its not a RAID HD. Keep the replies coming, i am willing to try, or retry anything. Thank you all in advance.

Glad to hear that. Try that memory-voltage bump next. And the "AMD-approved" thing on the PSU means nothing, really. Get a quality-brand unit, maybe a 400-450W Antec, Enermax or Fortron. Would you run a Dodge Viper on K-Mart motor oil, 87-octane gas and the wheels/tires off a Neon...?

:Q ~ ahhhhh... gotcha.

Yeah. ;)

1 of the things thats still on my mind is why the HD was making sounds before windows started to boot, or before windwos started to install. The HD made a sound like it was turning off, yet the rest of the system was still on, then about 5 - 7 seconds later, the HD would power back up with another sound. Kinda sounded like something inside the HD was smacking together when it powered off then back on. Anyone have any idea as to the relation of that to all this?

Okay...I realize this is an older post, but if you're still having this problem, I can tell you how to fix it. Here's what you're going to have to do:

1. Put your hard drive back into your old computer (I believe you mentioned you've already done this).
2. Right-Click on "My Computer"
3. Click on the "Hardware" tab
4. Click on "Device Manager"
5. Click on the + sign next to "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"
6. Double click on the STORAGE CONTROLLER
7. Click on the "Driver" tab and select "Update Driver"
8. Click "Next"
9. Choose "Display a list of the known drivers so that I can choose a specific driver."
10. Click "Next"
11. Choose "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller"
12. Click "Next"
13. Click "Next"

Windows should now install the generic IDE drivers. Once these are installed, shut down your machine, move the hard drive to the new machine, and boot up. You should be able to boot into Windows fine. Windows will then install the specific IDE drivers for your new motherboard.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any trouble.

Thank you for your post arkansasbuzzard. Unfortunately i had 7 days until i could no longer return it. 6 days came and went while i tried every thing i, and many other people, could possibly think of. I dont have the system anymore as i returned it. Thank you for the suggestion anyways.
