Does not show up in BIOS. Switched cables, etc. Change BIOS settings. Windows install will not see it either (duh since BIOS will not see it).

Is the firmware too new on these new drives to be used on an older chipset?

VIA Chipset. New WD Caviar Black 750gb 32 mb cache.

Anyone else have this problem?

Was going to use it as a WHS. It shows up on Asus A8N..nvidia chipset?

I remember those being a pain. To cut to the chase, use the A8N-series board if possible, or switch to an IDE hard drive.

Try setting the BIOS to IDE Emulation mode instead of SATA and then see if you can see the drive.
Look at this link at ASUS ... http://asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=65HeDI8XM1u6Uy6o
Be sure you have the latest BIOS and both of the MOBO Southbridge drivers installed.
You need the Southbridge and also the Promise Drivers to be installed

Southbridge
2 xATA 133/
2 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports Support RAID 0,1,0+1,
Promise R20378 RAID controller
1 xUltraDMA 133/ supports two hard drives
2 xSATA
Support RAID 0,1,0+1,

Thanks mate!

The BIOS will see it on the Promise Controller. Have the latest drivers from asus site, and am using the ATA set, and Win2003, but WHS still says cannot see a drive...good lord what pain.

Put the drive in SATA 150 mode. That's how I got my VIA K8 chipset to recognize my WD black drives.

Ended up using a older SATA 160gb seagate...works now....I hope. We shall see. For some reason, on my new workstation rig (new to me) the ABIT P35 board would not work with VISTA and a WD Raptor....kept getting BSOD etc...what a pain that was...ended up using a Samsung 650gb....this crap gets old. Now I know why i quit being an uber geek all the time.

Thanks for the help guys. you rock.

Caviar Black on my Asus board is a pain in the butt. It will never see it on a cold boot, so it's necessary to do Ctrl-Alt-Del during the POST screen fro the drive to be recognized.

Via chipset southbridges have a bug in that they cannot see SATA II (300) harddrives. You have to jumper them to SATA I (150).
