I have come to this forum for help with the problems above. I appreciate any help and advice given.

I bought an Asus K8V Se Deluxe for my new computer:

Antec 380W Truepower supply
AsusK8V Se Deluxe
Amd 64 3000+
Corsair Value Select 2X512 Mb DDR 400
Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB
Western Digital 80 Gigabyte Hard Drive 8 meg cache
Maxtor 200 gigabyte Hard Drive 8 meg cache
Sony Dru-540A/ Pioneer 106/A06 (Tried Both In my computer neither work)
Generic Dvd-Rom Drive

So I finish building my computer and run Windows XP Home Edition. Everything works fine till I install security updates. After installing service pack 1 on my computer. My Dvd-Burner can not read any disc. I thought it was security pack 1 that was the source, but it worked on my old computer I even tried my spare the pioneer. So I isolate the variable to motherboard (I believe).

I tried everything to see what the problem was. So I'm wondering is it possible that this motherboard is defective or incompatible for whatever reasons. I was gonna try returning the motherboard except I had it for 2 months before finishing building it and I don't have any of the boxes. So I am considering buying the SoltekSL-K8AN2E-GR since I read it's a nice stable board. The reason i'm so frustrated is Asus has a great track record and I wouldn't expect to get a defective item from them. This problem just really confuses me hence why I asked for you help.

Thank you for your advice.

Service Pack 2 is the latest one, did you mean SP2?

Your DVD burner isn't plugged into the red fitting on the motherboard, is it? If it is, try one of the other two. The red one connects to the Promise SATA controller as a sort of bonus port, but the Promise controllers typically will not recognize optical drives.

No I meant Service Pack 1, but it does do it with 2 also. I also connected it to the the Ide Channel like I was suppose to. What I was saying is the Dvd-Burner (The Dvd-Rom drive never has a problem) works fine until I install Service Pack 1 or any other Service Pack for thht matter.
