Asus K8V deluxe says I don't have a promise controller?

Ok I ONLY have ONE WD EIDE SE 80 gig (JB) and I don't want a RAID ir SATA setup installed.

Anyway, I get toa point where it says....."scanning ide devices".....then it says that I have "no fast trak device installed " and I "need a bios".

Should I go into the bios and change a setting or settings?

My setup is......

amd 64 3200+
asus k8v deluxe
1 gig infineon pc3200 ram
ati radeon 9800 pro
WD SE 80 gig (eide)JB
Liteon cdrw 52 x 24 x52
asus cdrom 52x
Windows 2000

I can't even boot into windows. Can anyone help me?

Well all my settings in the bios are default and looks like the picture in the asus manual (4-22 and 4-23).

I only have ONE WD 800 JB SE eide hdd.

With that said I changed the Operating mode to (onboard IDE Operate mode) and rebooted then got a message saying searching for ide devices........then saying no bios found.....then I got a message saying........grub> ,............then I am stuck at that grub> thingy.

At page 4-23 of the manual I disabled the ONCHIP SATA BOOT ROM and disabled ONBOARD PROMISE CONTROLLER

After that I rebooted then went right to a section that said .......grub>....

I have no clue what command to type in there

I did it but I run into a screen that says...............grub>..........................I have no clue what command to type there?

Works fine for me 😀

Anyways is the hard drive detectable in the BIOS? If so, is your hard drive set as the first boot device in the BIOS?

Yes, its the first one to boot.

On another forum someone suggested these options.......

i've since read you can use the promise slot as a raid or a non raid..and there are 2 drivers available for that controller (raid or regular ide) then if you enable the promise controller and have an ide drive hooked up to it, there should be an option to select "raid" or "ide" on the promise controller..you cannot use atapi devices (cd roms etc) on your promise controller.. the promise bios will "activate" when you enable the promise controller..but if it has no driver, it will not detect the drive..so this all tells me you are using the promise controller, not one of the 2 regular ide channels..

if that is the case but you want to use all 3 for devices..for example, i have a cd burner, a dvd/cd rom and an ide hd and i want each separate, there are a few options:

#1 make sure your ide drive is on a regular ide controller channel and only hook up otherwise your cd rom or cd burner/rom on the other ide channel and get your os installed and worry about the promise channel later...one of the old tricks we used to use on the a7v133 with promise onboard raid and when we wanted to enable the promise controller not during the install but after the fact, was once the os was up, you go to your system devices and install the raid driver after the fact through the regular find new hardware and install the driver option. then at that point, you could install the ide promise driver so that channel is enabled..then move your ide drive to the promise channel which is now driver enabled, go into bios to turn on the promise controller, select ide and voila..you can use both your regular channels for 2 separate atapi devices (your cd rom and a dvd , etc.)

#2 use the f6 option when installing os (assuming it's windows 2000 or xp) when setting up and install the non raid driver..again, make sure the promise controller is enabled, but set in ide mode not raid, and that the hd is on the promise controller. no different then setting up a promise raid device except you are using non raid drivers.

#3 spend $20 or so and buy an add on promise ide controller card like a tx2..i have a couple kicking around so i have the following setup:

hd on one regular ide channel

my cd rom/burner on the second ide channel

then i have a dvd drive and regular cd rom on my add on promise controller card.

no issues and it all installed fast and with no issues

Ok so any of those options sound good? anyone like to add anything?

comments?

It's normal for the Promise controller to say that its BIOS is not installed, if you do not have any hard drives hooked up to it. If you don't want to see that message, then disable the OnBoard Promise Controller in the BIOS (see your owner's manual, page 4-22 and 4-23).

Plug your Western Digital into one of your motherboard's standard IDE plugs (these are the ones that are oriented vertically) and jumper it for "single drive" (assuming it is the only drive on the cable). Now go ahead and boot from your Win2000 CD-ROM and start Setup.
