ASUS K8N-E Deluxe

Hey guys, Need some serious help here. -And after glancing through the threads It looks like I'm not the only one having trouble, but I think my problem may be something else. I'm a noobie, so please forgive any stupid comments I may make. I'm putting together an Asus K8n-e deluxe board using a A64 3400, and PQI Turbo 3200 (single channel 1x 1024mb, 3-4-4-8 timing) <I don't know what this means, but oh well. Also using a a Hitachi 120GB HDD (SATA).
I'm at the point where it is all together, but when I power it up the fans turn on , (including the CPU),but the HDD doesn't seem to be activating, PLUS I'm getting no signal to my monitor . (Using a Geforce 6800 GT, and yes I have a sufficient pwr supply. 480 watts.
I took the computer into a shop yesterday, and the guy told me I had to use ECC memory on this board, even though the manulal says ecc or non-ecc. What's the deal?

Asus ships motherboards with old BIOS versions. this causes the mobo to not recognize the CPU. connect the speaker jack and power up the board. it will tell you what the error is (i know, it's cool!).

if you dont get anything, it's pretty safe to assume that your BIOS is out of date. you will have to flash upgrade it... which you cannot do, unless you have another working rig.... so... call asus and have them ship you a new BIOS chip.

i went through this exact same thing... 'cept mine was a k8v se deluxe with a 3200.

So non-ecc memory should work? Checked Asus web site and they saiis all BIOS versions will accept a 3400- cpu. I'm a little stumped, and I cannot pinpoint the problem. Guess iwill call asus. THANKS FOR THE HELP! (Still no sound out of speakers. and no monitor signal.) Thankfully my other system is still up and running, so if I must flash the bios i can do so.

The guy at the shop doesn't know what he's talking about. You do not need ECC memory for this motherboard.

I also don't think it's the BIOS, but it couldn't hurt to flash it...unless you mess it up. I'd unplug everything from the motherboard and then reconnect it all first. That includes all your IDE cables (both ends). Then connect everything one at a time and see if it works. When it stops working, the last item you connected is the problem.

Make sure your HDD is set ask the master too.

going to take it apart and start over. Hopefully I overlooked something. Like I said, this is my first build up. Thanks for the help. I'll post when I have something.

I also just received an Asus K8N-E a couple days ago and had the exact same problem where it would not boot up and the fans just spinned. I've put together a lot of PCs and always had good luck with ASUS so I was like..what?? I had two sticks of 512MB Mushkin PC3500 Level II (BH5) in there, but it doesn't like 1 stick. If I have both sticks in, it won't boot. If I have the one "bad" stick in there, it won't boot but if I have the only the one "good" stick just in there, it boots fine every time and I can run all memory tests with no errors. I guess one of my ram sticks is bad. I ordered some Crucial PC3200 Ballistix which I hear does ok in A64 boards. We shall see. Apparently these A64 boards can be picky with ram sometimes.

I didn't get any audible message when the board wouldn't boot. I was hoping to so I would at least have a clue what was up. I would recommend trying your 1 stick of ram in the different mem slots on the board..also make sure it is firmly in the slot. Also try to flash the BIOS to 1005 if you can somehow get that thing to boot up. You may want to also try clearing the CMOS, removing and re-inserting the battery and stuff like that. Also maybe remove the ram stick altogether and see if the board at least gives you an audible message. Good luck.

I get the same thing w/ or w/o the ram installed. I should know something later today. I have someone much more knowledgable than I comming over to take a look at it. Thnx for the advice.
BTW, how do you set a SATA HDD as master? I'm only using the single drive right now.

Did you plug in the 4-pin ATX connector at the top?

inline6 is wrong - the 1001 BIOS for the K8N-E can detect all current A64's.

Only the new Skt754 Sempron needs 1003 BIOS.

And if both of you are first-time builders it's quite likely you forgot to connect BOTH power connectors from the power supply unit to the motherboard.

I repeat, there are TWO cables from the power supply that need to be connected to the motherboard. Most Athlon XP and Pentium3 mobos only had ONE. For the A64, you still have that old one (12-pin I believe) and also a smaller 4-pin connector. This is the MOST COMMON first-time builder error when dealing with A64s.

Well I figured it out. Turns out there was NO CMOS jumper installed!! I was going to reset it and realized the problem. Once I put the jumper in, Everything booted right up. THANK YOU ALL.! Espsecially tomd222.
