Hope other people out there see this before they toast their BIOS too...
There is a DESIGN FLAW in BIOS versions previous to 1006 on the ASUS K7V motherboard. If you have "Byte Merge" enabled in the CMOS settings and attempt to flash your BIOS it is guaranteed to TOAST your BIOS... INCLUDING THE BOOT BLOCK!!!
Ironically, of course, this problem is fixed in version 1006, but the motherboard I was dealing with had 1005a on it out of the box and I was going to flash 1007 onto it.
ASUS has *NOT* messaged this to customers in any way. The only way I found out about what happened was by searching around for a couple hours on the net and found some other people who have had the same exact problem. I did some digging around on the ASUS site and read the revision histories for the past few BIOS's and one of the things listed as being fixed in 1006 was the "byte merge causing bad flash upgrade" problem. ASUS *KNEW* about this problem on and most likely before May 31 of this year (when 1006 was released), yet said nothing on their website nor were there any inserts in the box the board came in saying anything about this.
