Asus K55N upgrade help

So I won myself a new K55N laptop from my local credit union. Figured Asus laptops are easily upgradable, so I swapped out the DVD drive and threw in a Blu-Ray which costed $69 - the sale of the DVD drive in there. So $19 invested there.
I upgraded the A8 4500M to a A10 5750M, cpu costed $189 and sold the A8 for $129. So far I am invested $79

Figured I have myself a very usable first laptop. It almost does everything I need it too except for two things. I want to watch movies in full 1080p and have a easier time browsing the web without scrolling so much. I found a 1080p screen for $89 that will fit in nicely with only minor modifications to my mounts. I can not simply swap it out however. The video cable inside this laptop is single channel and will not support 1080p resolution. Anyone know where I can get a duel channel cable for this thing? I tried searching to no avail.

One other thing... not really a concern, Asus web site says max memory on this laptop is 8GB. It currently has 4GB. I want to upgrade the memory to 16GB. Is the 8GB memory limit imposed by BIOS on here? Or was it the older CPU? I was under the impression AMD CPU's have their memory controller built into the CPU. There is no physical pin difference on a 1GB stick vs 8GB on DDR3. 8GB will work for the time being. Just would like it at 16GB.

You can purchase a screen nearly anywhere. Pretty much speaking screens are only made by three manufactures and update the screens few and far in-between. Of course they have different mounts on the different resolutions. On mine, I eye-balled one by the same manufacturer and without actually taking mine out, it looked like the screw mounting holes are only in different places. So I just drill some new holes... if I can find a dang cable :\

Thanks for the memory link btw :) I'll give 16GB a try. Worst case senario, it will not work in mine, but will work in my friends computer and hope he buys it and I just order 8gb

K55A here. The only screens I found on a cursory search are 1366x768, and with no further specs specified so I don't even know what type they are. I did ponder replacing it for the same resolution but with something better than the very poor TN it came with, but it's difficult to know what's TN and what's not.

Are there screen model numbers to search for that are known the be compatible? Or some standardized physical form and connectivity type that I could look for?

Is your stock screen a very poor TN with no vertical viewing angle that lets you see the whole screen at once undistorted, with black backgrounded screens looking like shimmering grey (+mirror effect), with a lack of saturation on most of the screen in most angles, and with apparently 6-bit dithering and not the greatest pixel response?

----

EDIT: Are you sure your model can support 1080p at all? That seems to require dual channel LVDS, and not just the cable.

Speaking of screen replacements, depressingly, I only see very few non-TN models at 15.6", and even those are all 6-bit:
http://www.panelook.com/modelsearch...y=IPS&signal_type_category=LVDS&button=Search

One supports FRC, but I don't know how the notebook would handle that or what I would think of that at 60Hz. That site also lists 1 discontinued MVA model (6-bit + FRC).

You know I am not certain if it can support 1080p at all, the APU can for certain, all I know is the cable is single channel, I do not know if the connector can handle a dual if there is a difference.

As far as the screen goes, like I said, just easy modifications to the mounts to slap in a different screen.
I am using the HDMI out on my home TV to surf and what not at the higher resolutions. A wireless keyboard and mouse is quite handy for laptops.... maybe even moreso then a carry bag :)

Hey man, I have the K55N and I was just wondering how you went about upgrading the CPU/APU. Was it a painless process? And was just curious where you sold your A8 4500 to make up the cost for the new CPU/APU. Thanks!

I have a K55N-BA8094C with BIOS ver 217. I tried putting an A10-5750m in... no dice. Put the A8-4500m back in and it fired right up. From everything I've read it should be a direct swap. Of course there is the chance that I got a dud APU.

Hello,

Did you ever figure out if the issue was the bios version or a dud APU? I have the same exact model (K55N-BA8094C) from Best Buy and I am looking at doing the same upgrade (from A8-4500M to A10-5750M).

Thanks,

George
