The ASUS GTX680-DC2O-2GD5 is a triple-slot design.

Which z77 motherboards could handle a pair of those in SLI and an additional single-slot PCIe card?

Thanks!

Oh, wow. Don't do this. I've tried 3 slot cards in SLI before and its NOT pretty. Do not do it.

The proximity of the cards to each other will completely negate any temperature / overclocking benefit that they have in 1 card configs. You're better off with reference. But if you insist on it, basically all Z77 motherboards support SLI. You could get a quad sli motherboard such as the P8Z77 WS, P8Z77 premium, EVGA Z77 FTW which all cost 350$ plus for 1 more slot space between the cards , but again, those cards SUCK in sli unless they are water cooled. You're really better off with reference cards since they exhaust heat out of the back of the case, instead of dumping everything inside your case (which causes GPU1 to get ridiculously hot even with good air flow)

I agree with blackened23 here...

Either try to find two slot cooler non reference GTX 680, or you could go reference.

Another option is 2x ASUS GTX 670 Direct CU II (two slot coolers) which is almost as fast as the 680's. I'll be getting two of these tomorrow

Get two MSI 670 Power Edition cards. They're on Newegg and will match or beat the non TOP DC II 680 with a little overclocking, and are fully voltage unlocked.

Any brands you prefer? Hopefully you aren't price sensitive? This seems to fit the bill. There would be an unused pci-e 2.0 slot between them (would need a long SLI cable).

Keep in mind the DCII is actually a 2.5 slot card. Even with a card inserted between them, cooling should be fine.

Getting 670's is good advice. Would allow you many more options and almost identical performance.

Wrong. Two air cooled DC II's is not a smart move, like Blackened said. I have two, and tested one with my current card in SLI before I gave the second to my son. The temperature of the top cards core approached 90C very quickly, and VRMs were hitting 120C. It really isn't a good idea, even with a reference card below the DC II core temps were mid to upper 80's. Yes it's 2.5 slots but it still leaves only 1/4" inch between the two cards.

What was the wrong info I gave? If you look at the board I recommended it has 4 slots between the cards.

The issue is that heat rises, and all that heat, regardless of one empty slot or two, is just going to get sucked in by the top DC II fans and heat that card up very fast.

A sidecase fan blowing straight at the cards will help, I think. We'll see when I get my two ASUS GTX 670 DC II tomorrow. I have a 120mm sidecase fan in my CM storm scout, which will blow straight between the cards.

That's not even physically possible, isn't it? The Asus card is 3 slots wide, but due to its design you need a 4th slot for airflow otherwise it would choke on the back of the next card. Meanwhile you can't have 8 slots on an ATX motherboard; the maximum is 7.

What you would need is something like the ASRock Z77, but even then you'd have to be sure there's space below the motherboard so that the second card could breathe (as opposed to being boxed in by a PSU or case bottom).
