Asus G2S-B1

I've searched through notebookreview.com and didn't find many opinions. Any opinions about this laptop?

I currently have a Dell Inspiron E1705 which has given me nothing but problems for the last 2 months. I can't deal with Dell's "tech support" anymore so the wife and I decided to get rid of this laptop and purchase a new one.

I want the new laptop to be my "desktop" replacement. This one only comes with 2 gig of memory but I can purchase more afterwards and put it in myself (the G2S-B2 is almost 3-400 bucks more and the only main difference I noticed was the extra gig of memory).

TIA!

You're right only difference is the extra gig of ram. Usually Asus denotes models with A, B, C which mean different resolutions, CPU's, and whatnot.

In the case of this laptop, go for the cheaper one.

There's your review, it's for the G2S-A1, but it's the same laptop, just with a different CPU. It should answer all of your questions.

It's a 8600MGS, which is a lot slower than the 8600M GT.

May I recommend the ASUS M50SV-A1? The B1 version has Blu-Ray but T8100 instead of T9300.

The 9500M GS is a few percent faster than the 8600M GT.

I second the M50sv.

Although if you are really looking for a desktop replacement, you should take a look at the Sager 9262 or 5793. Those are real desktop replacements, and are chock full of power.

Ooooh that one looks nice. Any idea if theres a similar model in 17"? I guess I could get a 15.4". It's just that I've been using the 17" for over 1.5 years now and have really gotten used to teh screen size/resolution.

Have you thought about a nice external monitor.

The F8 series from Asus are quality 14" laptops with the offerings of 15.4" and 17" laptops, but once you hook it to an external monitor you forget the laptops size. Thus you get the portability of a smaller machine, with the power and quality of a desktop replacement.

The F8SN is similarly speced to the M50SV, but can be had for like $1100 at newegg. Then use the leftover money to get a PS3 for bluray playback.

I've got a desktop already and a small 12" laptop 🙂 This machine is to become my main desktop replacement because I like to sit in the living room while using the PC rather than my office. This allows me to spend more time with the family.

Here's a chart which confirms that the 9500M GS is faster than the 8600GT. Here is a site for some benchmarks for the 9500M GS.

I don't think there is a similar model in 17 inch from ASUS.

I do know that Acer will be releasing a 16 and 18 inch laptop in the near future. Looks really nice imo. Acer Aspire Gemstone Series. If you can wait, I advise you to wait for a while to see what the Gemstone looks like.

If you already have a small and light laptop to carry around, why not get a TRUE gaming laptop with an actual high-end mobile GPU? While the 8600M GT is a decent mobile GPU, it is only a midrange part.

This gateway P-172S FX comes with an 8800M GTS 512MB GPU that blows away the 8600M GT, so if you like to game on your computer definitely consider this over the 8600.

It's well spec'd for the price (2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, 160GB 7200RPM HDD, 1440x900 screen), and the price is pretty good at <$1400 retail and even less if you look around online (I know Best Buy was selling them for a few hundred less not long ago).

If you have a bit of cash to spare, you can always upgrade to the P-172X FX with the same GPU but an upgraded 2.4 GHz Penryn CPU, 4 GB RAM, 320GB 7200RPM HDD, and 1900x1200 screen.
