Question Asus G17 Strix Scar laptop connecting to 27" external monitor limits resolution, refresh

Connecting an Asus laptop 2021 model to an Acer 27" XF270HU monitor with an HDMI cable. The Asus has a 300hz 1080p screen. Acer has a 144hz 1440p screen. Windows 10 only allows 2 choices:
1. Laptop 1080p 60 hz and Acer 1440p 144hz or
2. Laptop 1080p 300 hz and Acer 1080p 24 hz.

Is this a limitation from the 3070 graphics card? Or do I need a different cable like a USB type C to displayport?
