ASUS finally came through.......now the hard part!

I finally made contact with a human being at ASUS and they agreed to take back my P3C-2000 which was reportedly plagued with MTH problems. They are going to give me a P3V4X which appears to be a darn good board. My question is this.....What would be the best way to swap the boards without having to reload every swinging thing? Is there any way to purge my system of the old system devices without reformatting the hard drive and starting from scratch? Yes, I'm a lazy bastard but I want to make sure this is done right too. Thanks all

as a side note, my friend, two months ago, returned his p3c-2000 in exchanged for a cusl2... i am serious, that's 100% true! maybe you should talk to them again about it.

Another way to clear devices after moving to new mb, such as when using Ghost or even just a MB swap, is to boot first time into safe mode. Start regedit, open up the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive and delete the the whole ENUM hive. Be sure to do this in safe mode. Got this from BXBoards.com, I think... It does work, but a whole fresh install is probably better.

Why is a CUSL2 better than a P3V4X? I've read the reviews on the latter and it appears to be a real ripper. Quite stable too! I like the idea of keeping my existing RAM and ISA slot (for my legacy scanner) also. Am I missing something? Also, from the other post's here, it looks like there is no easy way out. To do this right I'm going to have to start from scratch. Hey, while I'm yakking here, will my Intel Ultra ATA storage drivers work on a VIA chipset? Just thought of that. 😕 EDIT: Just got back from the ASUS site (should have gone there first I guess) and checked out the CUSL2. OK, it's got an i815 chipset, uses socket 370 (I have a slot 1), has onboard audio & graphics (blechhhh!), no ISA slot and I'm not sure I need a CNR doo-thingy. Am I missing something folks? Can the Intel chipset be that more superior than VIA? Help me out here peoples!

In many ways the CUSL2 is better than the P3V4X, but since you have a Slot 1 processor, and legacy ISA peripherals, then forget about it. Normally the CUSL2 does not come with on-board audio, and you can use an external AGP adapter and disable the onboard graphics. The CUSL2-C version does not even have onboard graphics.

You cannot use the Intel ATA Storage Drivers on the P3V4X. You must use VIA's 4-in-1 drivers.

Ideally you should do a format and reinstall. This prevents old drivers and registry entries and stuff like that causing errors and conflicts that might pop up.

The P3V4X is a nice board that comes in two flavors. The older revision comes with the ICS clock generator which gives you 32 FSB speeds. The newer version comes with the Winbond clock generator which gives you 16 FSB speeds. I think that they switched chips because the ICS chip runs very hot, and might not work at speeds of 140+ FSB. One trick used was to put a heatsink on the clock generator. Most people seem to have problems in the 140~150 FSB range. Very few can get it to 150+ FSB. The ICS chip goes to 166 FSB. The Winbond chip only goes to 150 FSB.

The P3V4X also allows you to o/c your SDRAM. At 66 MHz, it allows you to run either at the speed, or +PCI. At 100 MHz, it allows you 3 options: -PCI,0,+PCI. "0" meaning that the memory speed runs at the FSB speed. At 133 MHz, it allows you to run 0,-PCI.

To improve your memory scores, let the BIOS set your SDRAM by SPD. This allows you 4-way memory interleaving automagically. You can set it youself using H.Oda's utilities if you want to dabble and tinker.

I have a P3V4X and like it alot. There are better boards out there now, but at the time I bought it 13 months ago, it was the best IMO.
