what limitations do these netbooks have?
can it use a resoloution of 1280x720 if i use the vga out port?
can it use vista x64?
can vista be installed from a flash drive?

should i get this or just a cheap 300 dollar notebook from best buy or something?

Im really only using it as a 2nd comp to do little things on and also hooking it up to my tv so i can

stream hd movies to my tv. (thats why i need to know if it can do 720p)

how much worse performance can i expect from this netbook than a cheap laptop?

also what the deal with the net storage? is it safe?

the atom processor is pretty abysmal compared to any intel 'core' processor

Installing Vista probably isn't the best idea. Most of them are meant to be small, light weight, light-duty machines rather than all purpose or desktop replacements. That's why nearly all of them are coming with Linux or Windows XP.

If you're doing more than note taking and web browsing, you'd be better off getting something with a dual core Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, Turion, etc. with 2GB or more of memory and a decent-sized hard drive. Even a "low end" laptop with any dual core is going to be leaps and bounds ahead of a netbook for multi-tasking and CPU-limited tasks. The gap is even bigger if you're looking into light gaming, as the graphics chipsets on the netbooks make even the integrated graphics on a standard laptop look like a GTX280.

For streaming I'd go with a cheap traditional notebook.

If you're into modding, they're a hoot, I just got a 901, have upgraded the ram to 2 GB, added a GPS unit, a larger battery that gives me nearly 10 hours on batteries and just ordered a 64GB SSD drive for it.

If you want one, do a search for "live cash back" and find one on eBay, you should be able to get it in the ~$225 range with 30% cash back.

The EEEs don't even come close to having the hardware to support Vista. Nore is it a 64 bit CPU.

I had an acer aspire 1 which has almost exactly same spec so I'll base my answer on that.

it can handle 720p WITHOUT any problem. (used Planet earth 720p)
I used vga out with my 22" and it was able to run 1680x1050 without any problem, although it was not as sharp or crisp as DVI connection but it was not too bad.
It was surprisingly fast with winXP. It ran photoshop and sketup pro pretty well. Other uses (web, movies, music) all ran fine.

Only concern would be the video quality if the main point is for streaming. maybe one of those popcorn things will be better?

my 4 year old (seems like it) pentium-4m 2.2ghz seems alot faster than this atom.

which is a shame.

the only thing good about these small machines is the put in in purse or mount it somewhere light on space deal.

i'd get the hp for keyboard; hp for support.

if you've ever called in to get your ASUS or MSI video card considered for repair; you'll know what kind of support those two companies give. poopie :)
