Asus EEE 701 or Acer Aspire One?...which one is better ?

Hi guys,

I'm thinking about getting something small and hackable (I want to install XP on it) for my European travels this year... and I have the option to go for the 4GB EEE 701 (webcam version) or the Aspire One.

The Aspire One has a nicer, larger screen, but it's $50 more expensive. (CAD $350)
The 701 comes in the Deluxe pack - which adds a 4 GB SD card and a mouse. (CAD $299)

Basically, with the extra 4GB added via SD, the Asus would have pretty much the same specs as the Acer.

The ASUS is smaller, and has a nicer trackpad.
The Acer has a larger screen.

I have no qualms about size of the keyboards or the preinstalled OS - I understand ASUS provides the instructions for installing XP, any way.

Under these circumstances, which one would be a better value?

I'd like to hear from various owners and/or reviewers... what are your thoughts?

Thanks!

I took my 701 to Japan for two weeks and have taken it hiking a few times and have no problems even with all the jostling around.

I'm actually looking to sell mine if you are interested. I'll send you a PM when I get home.

As far as the CPU is concerned, unless you're going to be photo editing it's fine. You can OC it to 900mhz using eeectl too. The only problem is some apps will take longer to to open than what you are used to (like winamp opening instantly for me), but it's good for everything else - movies, browsing and GPS stuff.

My local Circuit City has the Acer Aspire One in blue with the 8GB SSD and Linux for $379. It looks and works a whole lot better in person than I thought it would. The keyboard is actually usable. One of my local stores has the EEEPC 701 and with the newer netbooks out with bigger, higher rez screens, I don't think I'd want to go for the 1st gen EEE PC at this point.

There is a version of the Aspire One that has WinXP Home and a 120GB hard drive, but everywhere's sold out. Mwave had it for $419 and Buy.com has them on order for $399. Battery life isn't so great though, with the standard 3-cell battery...

I have a eee pc 1000H, but of your two choices, only the Aspire One has the Atom Processor, and that makes all the difference, not to mention, the slightly larger (8.9'') screen, better keyboard (in my opinion, every Asus keyboard before the 900 series is horrible), and the build quality is better too. Asus has really improved their build quality in their more recent models, and now is about equal to the Aspire One.
