Asus EAH6850 Cannot Run 2 U2711 Monitors at full resolution

I have a second machine I built and put a Asus EAH6850 video card in it and for whatever reason with my 2 U2711 Dell Monitors it will only run one at 2560x1440 and the highest it will let me run the second one is 1920x1080. I didn't think this card was a low end card at all so I figured I would not have any issues but is this a hardware limit on this card or am I doing something wrong? I have tried both the Asus drivers and the latest ATI drivers with no change.

I believe the new 6xxx Radeon cards only have 1 Dual-link DVI ports. If you want to connect more than one you must use a Active Displayport to DVI adapter.

You can also use displayport to drive the U2711 at 2560x1440. You'd need a dual-link active adapter to drive the U2711 at 2560x1440... but that'd be pointlessly expensive, seeing as how the U2711 accepts displayport natively so you might as well get a cheap DP to DP cable.

I can return this card easily, is there a good card performance wise that will run both on the dual link DVI port (I am using a DVI KVM and dont want to try and add adapters to this already big cable mess).

I would do as kevin suggests and hook the 2nd display up via displayport. But if you want to use DVI also for the 2nd then I would go with a GTX 570.

Kind of a bit of an aside, but the one thing I never liked about DisplayPort (my 2709 has it as well) is that it's like HDMI in regard to no signaling (I think that's the proper term). Which means that unlike DVI or VGA, when you turn the monitor off, the monitor is effectively not connected to the computer anymore. So everything you had on the other monitor shifts back to the first one. I'm not 100% sure if everything goes back to where it was when you turn it back on, but I believe it does.

I took it back to Microcenter as they had a good deal on a 570 that was a good deal at 299.99 after rebate with a 10 year warranty. Runs great too.

Well 570 quit working on second port so I got a Saphire 6970 which says it has dual dl dvi ports but still does same thing I am now pissed.

all 6000 series only have one DL DVI port. however, i believe you can drive your second display using the HDMI 1.4.

As Moriz has noted, the entire 6000 series is the same. If you want to drive 2 high resolution monitors over DVI with a 6000 series card, you need a DP to DL-DVI adapter. Your alternatives are to use NVIDIA cards, or use other interfaces. Since you need DVI specifically, then you're going to want to stick to NVIDIA.

i'm reasonably sure that the HDMI 1.4 slot can push 2560x1440. if you have a HDMI 1.4 cable, give it a shot.

I'm pretty sure the U2711 doesn't support resolutions over 1080P via HDMI. In fact I'm not sure any video cards on the market can currently drive >1080P on HDMI.

my 5850 can drive 1920x1200 over HDMI. i have one of those now "illegal" HDMI to DL DVI cables, and it easily handled my dell 2405fpw's native resolution.

being that it is a modern monitor, i'm pretty sure the U2711 can handle HDMI 1.4, especially since HDMI 1.4 can do 3x 2560x1440. if not, an adapter might do the trick.

Gave up and picked up a PNY 580, now the question is do I swap cards and put this 580 in my extreme edition machine and take the ATI and put it in the 2600k machine.

Always the pendent.:p

1920x1200 is for all intents and purposes the same as 1080P. The point I was trying to make was that I don't believe (actually, I'd put good money on it) that any video cards can currently drive monitors at the next step up; so 2560x1440 and 2560x1600 cannot currently be achieved with HDMI.

I guess it's a question of what you intend to do? The 580 is the faster card, so it would make sense to put it in the faster machine. That's probably the 2600K if you're overclocking it.
