ASUS Dual GPU Video Card requires it's own external PSU?

If anyone recalls the near-fabled 3DFX Voodoo 5 6000, which had 4 GPUs on a single PCB, it required an external power supply. The new offering for dual GPU from ASUS does the same. And with the potential for 4 GPUs across two cards in that tight space - hot.

Would you rather buy a new power supply that can handle SLI?

Yeah, seriously.
If they supply an external source it's if anything to reduce the stress on the system PSU.
I for one can't see dual 7800GT's on one board taking more power than a 7800GT in SLI setup, if anything it'll take less power, so yay for an external PSU to reduce the internal PSU strain, and it comes with the card, so there's no seperate purchasing cost.

It doesnt bother me. In fact, I like it.

If dont think this is an issue.. you cant think the Crossfire dongle is an issue.

I have no idea what they mean... the Voodoo5 6000 required a molex connector, but not an "external power supply". And........ a molex connector on a video card is nothing new....

Yes they do, at least with the Asus card. There is external power brick that comes with the card. There is a picture of it here.

Pay for a new high end PSU to power your SLI setup or use the packed in brick for no extra cost..... tough choice

According to the article I read on the card, you can either plug the card into an additional Molex (assuming your PSU can put out enough juice), or plug the second power connector into the AC/DC adapter they bundle with the card.

You don't *have* to use the external power brick, but you do have to provide two additional power feeds to the board.

Oh OK, well I do find that kinda surprising. Never knew any of the Voodoos had such a thing! Was it the V5 6000 that was never released or the Voodoo6 (was that even announced?)

Because if a person complains about a dongle in Crossfire, then they should likewise complain about the external power. Except its even worse.
