Asus DirectCU II Lineup Of Video Cards

The 6850 i had with it only had 1 fan 🙁

The one i had just blows the air into the case. The shroud doesn't completely encompass the card.

The 580 one uses less power than a reference at idle and load with a very small overclock too. I have one and will have time to play with it tomorrow.🙂

Sometimes running transistors cooler can have that effect. As they get hotter resistance increases, which makes them use more power and get even hotter. In extreme cases you end up with Thermal Runaway until either protection circuitry kicks in or it burns up.

I believe the asus is a non reference pcb or something like that.
Temps have dropped 18c under load vs reference card.

Anyways heres the card.
Excellent

They could have have this a double slot and been fine. That third slot doesn't even look like it does anything at all.

So, will the 6990 and 590 CUII be 4 slots? 😱

Just kidding. I like the idea a lot. Good for those who only want a single card and want to be able to wring the most out of it.

I'd like to see a comparison to the acelero xtreme.

I wonder if they're going to do a 6990 monster card.

If what we've been told is true, the reference 6990 is a monster card. No place left for the AIB's to go. That said, I'm pretty sure that improved cooling will be needed, though. I'll be surprised if a dual slot, single blower cooler will be sufficient at any reasonable noise level.

What happened to your old card?

I decided to return it to newegg. I'm sure newegg didn't mind since I turned around and spent $500 on the direct 2. I was only getting 830mhz on the core at 1050v and hitting mid 80's in temps on the reference 580. I turned the direct 2 cu card to 862mhz at 1025v with no problem. I had it at 906mhz at 1075 before I quit messing with it. I also was mid 70's load temps with a much higher oc and the fan is dead quiet. I'll see how far I can get with 1.1v. I'm hoping for 950mhz. I am not a hardcore overclocker. I don't see any need in running my card into the ground for a few MHz.

I'm not a hardware core OC'er it just gets hot as hell where I live during the summers. If I don't have AC running I have to move my rig to the basement if I want to game. My 6970 has the cooling plate on the back stock and it vents out the back of my case instead of into my case

I love my 6970 & my case keeps it cool & quiet. But I would have snatched one of these Direct CUs up in a heart beat. I just couldn't wait because my rig needed a video card. At least now I'll be able to wait for a Direct CU version of AMD's 7000 series be it 7970 or their duel GPU Halo card.

I love my direct 2 580. As of now looks like I had to settle for 1.1v at 902mhz to be 100% stable. Load temps while gaming BC2 and GTA4 never go above mid 70's with stock fan profile which is dead silent. The direct 2 under load to me is no louder than the reference gtx 580 cooler at idle. The card is just amazing. Not very often you can say $500 well spent on a videocard. Best videocard purchase I've ever made.

any idea if there is enough room on larger motherboards to allow these to be run in crossfire/sli?

I have the CU I for my 460, it's really effective in cooling. The CU II seems to be a longer version of I. The heatsink they put in looks very massive, this will be one hell of a cooler.
