ASUS CUV-266 / OPINIONS & EXPERIENCES ???

I'm wondering if I should give this mobo a try since it's the first one with the VIA PRO-266-chipset in my reach. What I'm hoping for is some performance-boost like with the VIA KT-266-chipset for the AMD-family of processors.
I read two or three rewiews about it saying the mobo's alright and would only need some bios-update and so on.

So my questions are: Is it stable, is it fast, is it worth the money or is it just trouble ???

So has anybody already tested it in real life and could give me some facts.

Thanks for your posts !!!

No performance boost really, since the Pentium III cannot take advantage of the extra bandwidth offered by DDR SDRAM. If you have an existing BX or i815E based system, I suggest you stick to it.

Anandtech has a review of the board here.

It's not a bad board.....typical ASUS good quality, but if you really wanted this board, I suggest you wait for the CUV266-E instead....the big brother version of this board. It supports both DDR and SDR, and has an additional Promise ATA100 Controller as well.

@AndyHui

The bandwith-problem with the PIII is annoying, a almost forgot that and had to read the review again, nevertheless thanks for reminding me of that.
And the missing extra-controller is also a negative point. Since I could wait until now I'll wait at least for the E-version before I'll give INTEL another try.

Thanks for your input.

I think that if you really wanted a board like that, it wouldn't be my first choice....unless you HAD to have DDR SDRAM. That would be the ONLY reason to get that board.

Otherwise, in terms of features and performance, I would rather buy the CUSL2(-C) or the new TUSL2 if you needed the extra ATA100 Controller.

@AndyHui

I just visited ASUS-homepage and also saw the TUSL and it didn't impress me that much to be frank.
Since I don't plan to buy a P4 in the near future (to expensive and no assured support of it's architecture and SSE-II) further upgrades with AMD/VIA seems to be much more interisting to me. All I'm waiting for there are dropping temps of the processors because with all the fans needed for a really safe setup the computer just gets too loud, and I hate noisy computers.

Nevertheless, thanks for your reply and the link.

Given your reasoning in your post above, why are you asking for the CUV266 in the first place?

@AndyHui

The CUV266 seemed interesting because of the DDR-RAM. Since you pointed out that it doesn't profit of that memory-type, I see no sence in it.

The TUSL is nice because of the support of TUALATIN-processors, but on the other hand only supports SDRAM as memory-type and only 512MB at max. So, here we have one pro and facing two cons.

I guess what I desire is a mobo that can handle TUALATIN AND DDR. But that seems to be a dream at the moment.

Sorry, if I confused you.
