Asus CUSL2 Serious Problems

After reading the review of the Asus CUSL2 mobo on Anandtech, I was convinced it was the mobo for me. After intalling it, it has become more troublesome that I had ever anticipated. Here is my problem(s)...

1)After installing the mobo and doing a clean install of Windows, immediately after, i install the i815E INF files on the ASUS CD. Everything works just fine until I install my video card drivers (Diamond Viper II Z200). When windows attempts to start up, it freezes just before the login screen shows up. After some serious frustration, I did another clean install of Windows but this time not deciding to install the INF files on the Asus CD. Now my Viper works...sorta.

So the obvious answer is that my Viper is incompatible with my mobo right? Well I tried using two other PCI video cards (Diamond Stealth II S220 and STB Lightspeed 128) and oddly the same thing happens if I have the motherboard inf files installed. So I'm running the computer with the motherboard inf files not installed, but my computer now experiences random locks when doing alot of multi-tasking. The screen will freeze and the bottom 1/8 of the screen will become garbled. My DVD-ROM won't work, nor ATA for my drives, and my Logitech Mouseman Wheel USB mouse is being detected as a PS/2 mouse.

2) The only other major problem not video card related is my network card keeps turning itself on and off. Its a Linksys Ether fast 10/100 card. With or without the motherboard INF files installed, the card will periodically turn itself on and off (mostly when trying to connect to sites).

I've e-mailed Diamond and Asus multiple times, and no reply, not even one of those automated replys. I still have my Abit BH6 which has serverd me perfectly until the Slocket I had damaged the Slot-1 cpu socket. The only reason I bought the ASUS CUSL2 was because I needed a replacement mobo. Well, sorry for the long explanation, but if anyone can help, you would be saving this mobo from being snapped in half and crushing into a million pieces.

BTW here is a list of the System Specs I am running if that helps... I've tried booting the system with only the video card installed but that doesn't solve any of the problems.

Intel Celeron 500A (not overclocked)
Memoryman 64meg SDRAM w/ECC
Western Digital 6.4 and 13.0 gig hd
Diamond Max 40 Gig HD
Diamond Viper II Z200
SB Live Value
Stb TV Tuner Pro
Linksys Etherfast 10/100
Creative Encore 2x DVD-ROM
Sony Spressa 8x CD-RW
Iomega Jaz 1GB SCSI internal
Iomega Zip 250 USB
Logitech Mouseman Wheel USB
Logitech Internet Keyboard

First of all. You MUST install the INF updates. Otherwise the MB will not be able to find many of the features on the card ex. bridges, controllers ect.

What I did was:

- install the MB in the cabinet without any cards,

- install INF drivers,

- install the ATA drivers,

- use the on board VGA in the beginning,

- the first card to add is your grafic card, remember to disable the onboard VGA in the BIOS,

- install the drivers to the graffic card,

- when that is running, install the soundcard, and so on ONE CARD AT A TIME.

I did not have any problems with this MB just another great product from ASUS. Ahh OK then only one problem, the temp. does seem a little odd. But I think they will fix that in a BIOS update soon. They are working on it.

What version of windows? If its WindowsMe then its to be expected. WindowsMe has some major differences that nay-sayers deny. It is not Win98 with a reworked interface. It is similar but still very different, hence why it is not 98TE.

There are no updated .INF for winme yet.

I can't get the onboard VGA to work either. My board didn't come with a 4 Meg AIMM module. If I try to boot off just the onboard VGA, I get a blank screen and no startup at all. I installed it like you listed (but not with the onboard VGA) but I think the problem lies in the INF files and the Viper II.

SailorSasami: I think the 4 MB AIMM Module is an add-on to the 4 MB already on board.

SnoopyDog: What ATA drivers did you install and why?

Some things that may help:

* 1002 release bio
* Disable lagacy USB sppt (in bios)
* Make sure PNP OS set to disable/no
disable 2nd USB host controller in dev mgr.

Thanks for all the help but after getting the onboard VGA to work, I can not figure out how to disable it in the 1002 BIOS or device manager. According to Intel's website, most mobos will automatically disable it. I know in the 1002 BIOS there was an option to enable/disable it but now its mysteriously gone. The onboard card keeps being re-detected by windows and my monitor too, thus locking the system on bootup.

So I'm giving up on this POS. If anyone wants a cheap board, I'll sell it to them for 100 dollars or best offer. I paid 150 dollars for it so that's a pretty good deal.

I installed the ATA drivers cause on my first install of the board I ran into som problems regarding the secondary IDE-controller. After the install of the ATA drivers the problem vanished. Now everything is running smoothly. I dont even have problems with the extra USB ports which everybody seems to have. Works perfectly.

The ATA drivers I used was "INTELATA 6.0 multi"

Hope this helps you.

I know what your problem is now. You can't use ECC SDRAM on the CUSL2.

Get some non-ECC SDRAM and use that. Also make sure that you have the latest inf update, and possibly install the ATA drivers.

AndyHui-

That's not true - you can use ECC memory with the CUSL2. I have the CUSL2 and am using a 128M stick of Kingston ECC (from the netbuy deal a while back). Granted, I've had my share of problems, but most (not all) of them seem to have been worked out.
