I just recieved my motherboard, and installation instrutions demand a new hard drive. I didnt anticipate this requirment and didnt see any topics on this. I was wondering if some of you experts have a "work around".

I was thinking I could backup the HD I have to my Zip Drive, and exclude the windows directory. Then, reformat the hard disk.
The thing is that my 8.4gb EIDE Ultra ATA HD has multiple partitions. Can I reformat just the C: drive partition and keep the other partitions intact?

Seems that my idea would just cause more problems than it's worth, since the software that would be restored has the old Dell system configurations.

Is there any recommendattions for a new HD? (Brand)

I would think you wouldn't "have to" reformat or change drives, but it would be wise when changing out your board. Since you say you have to, and I don't have any hard evidence you don't; I will go on the assumption you will format. You probably can't copy everything but the windows directory and have all your programs work correctly. Lots of programs leave needed files in the windows directory and subdirectories. Also, registery and system files are changed when programs are added. You can however format just the C part of your HD as you elluded to, but again windows based programs may have to be reinstalled due to reason mentioned. Formatting only one partition like that works great for keeping files like MP3's, jpg's, documents, save files for games.

As far as what HD to get. I would recommend the Maxtor 7200 rpm series. There is a deal going on right now that will get you a 40 gig version for under $170. If you can't afford that, smaller versions can be had for less. These drives aren't as fast as the IBM new 7200 rpm drives, but they are cheaper, and they are pretty speedy. Zero problems with any maxtor drive I have purchased (darn just jinxed myself).

Maxtor and Western Digital are my favorites. Make sure it's at least 7200 rpm and ATA66 capable.

BTW, on my CUSL2 using WD drives the difference between ATA66 enabled and disabled is quite noticeable!
