Asus built in WiFi vs. discreet wireless NIC

I know that the built-in wireless cards on notebook PCs seem to work quite well, but do the built-in WiFi capabilities of some Asus boards work as well as discreet wireless PCI cards (or wireless USB dongles)? It might be worth the extra $40 to buy an Asus Mobo, as opposed to the Abit $89 board, if this feature works well to pick-up a wireless signal.
