Asus and Gigabyte to merge.

Seems like it's going to happen. I saw the news first on ocworkbench last week. and Inquirer also posted it today. Seems like Asus brand will be gone in favor of Gigabyte. I personally would keep Asus because of its reputation, but hey what do I know.

So, In 2012, We'll have 3 Companies controlling computer parts, Intel for CPU, Gigabyte for motherboard, and Microsoft for everything else. beh.

The news from hkepc is essentially that the companies have created a joint venture to defend their existing combined market share, with Gigabyte receiving an investment to defend the mid-range and in return cede the low-end to Asus' Asrock while Asus itself maintains the high-end.

The Asian obsession with numerology remains disturbing... as if making the annoucement on the 8th hour of the 8th day of the 8th month will somehow affect the prosperity of the venture. Not very professional in my opine, but hey diff'rent strizokes fer diff'rent fizolks.

i want Asus to remain the label i love asus.. however i disagre with their overpriced video cards, but their motherboards are very solid

I saw the news at FiringSquad.

I have never had any experience with Gigabyte so I can't really say anything against them regarding the merge. Are they a good or bad company?

My Gigabyte i815ep board worked great with a Tualtin 1.3a for several years in a file server.

But Newegg has horror stories of 3 in a row DOAs for their new core 2 compatible motherboards, so the quality now might not be what it was back in 2002.

Man, whats up with all of the mergeres lately? Gigabyte and ASUS, AMD and ATI........
Personally, I always hate to hear that two companies that used to compete are now merging, it always seems like it ends up in loss of product quality to the consumer. or inflated prices. or both.

I like both companies. I once considered Asus the best motherboard manufacturer, but in the last few years they have gone downhill. The fact that they are overpriced doesn't add much to their appeal. I'm currently using a Gigabyte motherboard for my AMD64 rig; It has been rock solid for more than a year and a half now, and was also a great value at the time.
