Asus A8V users: 2 questions..

So far I am unable to get the onboard network port to get access to the internet. The drivers for it were not installed, so I took the supplied cd and installed the Marvell Yukon gigabit lan drivers. Upon installing, my RJ45 port lit up, showing it was communicating with the cable modem. Yet no matter how many times, or in what manner I run the network setup wizard, or "create a new internet connection" .. I can't access the net. Am I missing something here?

Also, right off the bat, I had a "1394 net connection" in the properties of my network places, I assume this is the onboard firewire of the motherboard?

Second, I've got the comp running on 1 SATA hdd at the moment (windows is installed to it, boot drive). I can't get windows to show me the second one I've installed. It's listed in the bios (seagate 200gig SATA) and even listed in windows under hardrives in device manager. However it's not listed under my computer, I assume this is because it's yet unformatted. So my question is, how do I format something I can't see?

Thanks.

Your cable modem probably has only one IP address to hand out, and it's got it reserved for whatever computer was plugged into it before. It knows each network adapter by its unique hardcoded MAC address, like a fingerprint. You may need to power down the modem, unplug it, submerge it in water (ok, not really), then do a Start > Run > ipconfig /release on the computer, fire up the modem, and then do an ipconfig /renew on the computer so it can lay claim to that IP address.

Bigger picture on that: get a router so the router gets the modem's IP address and splits it up for you. Netgear RP614, Linksys BEFSR41, etc. The router will also provide a perimeter firewall to screen out hacker and worm attacks, and if you want to take more advantage of it for security, you can block unneeded ranges of ports too.

As for the formatting, go to Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Computer Management, and go down the console to here. The drive should be listed, with its capacity represented by a horizontal bar. You can right-click the bar and you'll see your options there 🙂

Thanks for the info man.

Btw incase you were wondering, I was able to get windows installed by plugging the boot hdd SATA cable into the SATA_RAID 1 port (or whichever one is closest to the edge of the mobo, the red ports side by side) and setting my promise to ide operation over RAID (there's only two settings). Booting from the windows cd, pressing F6 during windows installer and selecting the winxp378 SATA drivers from the diskette I made (My floppy drive and/or floppy disks are/were going to shite so it didn't always work, luckily I pre-made 3 floppies at work). After that It was smooth sailing, more or less 😉
My system will only boot with the two hdd SATA cables plugged into the SATA_RAID ports.

That's good news about the successful install. It fought you every inch of the way, didn't it! 😛
