Hi
I have been having this problem for sometime and have not figured out
what is causing it to be able to fix it.

When I start my HTPC (reboot/standby) the audio starts to stutter, with increasing
duration of pause, and gets worse until there is no audio whatsoever, later the audio
duration starts to increase and later it is perfectly fine. I am at a complete loss to
explain what is happening.

I know there are no IRQ conflicts, checked PCI latency which shows zero for my
PCI-express video card.

MoBo : A8V-E
Processor : AMD Athalon 3200+
Memory : Kingston 2x512MB dual channel
Video card : Gigabyte 6200
PVR card : Hauppage PVR150MCE
OS : MCE/XP-SP2

I also use teh onboard wireless functionality.

Don't know what else to tell you, except to start disabling on-board peripherals to see if the problem goes away. Then enable one at a time to see if the problem appears again. If you find an association between one device and the problem, you'll at least be better able to describe the problem in more detail to ASUS when you open a support ticket.

Audio Problems

A common problem on older VIA chipsets is audio problems such as crackling and hissing. If you're experiencing such problems with audio or poor audio performance, try the Latency Patch v0.19 or beta version 0.20. You can download this directly from the patch author: George E Breese's Website. George also has a Creative SoundBlaster Live!/Audigy soundcard patch which should reduce any audio crackling with these cards on a VIA chipset.

I tried the stutter / latency pach myself, because I also have the same issue. Probably not at the same level, but I do have it.

The audio issue isn't just on "older" chipsets. Because I have the problem, and so do someone I know at my job, same Mobo, same issues at different degrees and situations.

That patch helped at some extent. But the problem is still present in most of my games, especially.

I'm going to change this crappy A8V Deluxe soon, and will get the A8N-E. Problem(s) in A8V Deluxe and / or A8V-E isn't ASUS, it's VIA's crappy "chipset" solutions. I thought I would give em' a chance when I bought it. I had VIA products before, always had poor quality and issues here and there.

Yep, vive VIA indeed.

Actually, you don't.

The cause of the audio crackling and stuttering problems on older VIA chipsets are no longer pertinent since VIA released the VT8235 and Creative Labs fixed a design flaw in their older SB Live! cards. George Breese released the latency patch originally for VIA 586/686 and later for VT8231 and VT8233 South Bridges.

None of this applies to VT8237.
