ok, so it wouldn't post when i started that, then i found out that my bios was not updated and not compatible w/ my 3400+ socket 939. but what was unusual was that it would have a long continuous beep (not your usual bios beep, it goes on forever) whenever i started it up. then i turned it on without my videocard (6800 GT) and there was no beep. Could it be the power supply's problem? I mean, I have an antec truepower 380, it should be more than enough to power a 6800 GT. or could it be that my videocard is defective?

here are the specs:
athlon 64 3400+ socket 939
1 GB mushkin pc 3200 ram
seagate 160 GB IDE drive
lite-on dvd +/- rw drive
leadtek 6800 GT
antec sonata case w/ antec true380 psu

does anyone else have this problem?

interesting... my system wouldn't boot up at first because I had my dimm in a instead of b1. Once I switched that it booted right up. No BIOS update needed. However, my sticking point is the RAID...I've never setup a raid, so that part is new to me. I also have a 939 A64 3400.

It may be your video card as you suggested, but try moving the dimm around if you are using a single piece.

I'm using two pieces, both in the blue dimm slots. I don't know what the problem is, I know my bios is out of date, I have the 1007 version. I don't think it'd be a problem with a videocard, I mean I don't think a videocard would cause a beep...or maybe it's a problem with my power supply? but i highly doubt that.

Strange. AMI bioses don't have a code for a continuous beep. They have a couple Long beep then 2, 3 or 8 short beeps tho. 1 is bad video, another is bad memory and the last is bad motherboard.

Here's a good reference page for beep codes:

http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml

For memory problems....

Try taking the dimm out of slot A1. (the blue slot closest to the CPU) It could also be your memory. If it still beeps swap the two sticks in slot B1 and if that still fails, repopulate A1.

I realize I've been living under a rock for the past few years but let me understand this... if you fail to connect the auxillary power on the 6800gt, you'll fry the card?

i'm not sure, but it seems so. i kept on thinking i didn't connect it correctly and it wouldn't post..then i restarted it multiple times, and finally realized that i made a mistake . and there were lines all over the screen, an indication that it's damaged, but not fried..

Just put the molex again in...It won't damage videocard anyway. The lines just mark missing power!

well, even AFTER plugging in the molex connector, it still showed the lines. without the connector, the pc wouldn't boot.
