Yes, quite an old system.

I'd like to be able to play GTA4 and Bad Company 2, even on middle of the road settings, without building an entirely new system. Is there an 8x AGP graphics card I can put in that won't be bottlenecked too badly?

motherboard stats.

This is my former gaming rig (which was built in 2004 thanks to this board) now retired to a media editing and office computer. I'm going to pull the 7600 out and put it into an additional a8v based desktop for web design and graphics editing.

Not going to happen. Both games that you mention require a dual-core to even approach playability and really perform best with a quad.

Ditto to mfenn. My previous system was an Athlon 64 4000+ paired with an 8800GT, and even that card was severely bottlenecked by my single core processor.

Don't do what I did and waste money trying to breathe new life into an old system, especially a 6 year old system. I wish I had that money back now.

Agreed to the first few posters. In answer to your question, you could throw in a HD3850 AGP and a dual-core CPU replacement (e.g. X2 4600+) for the board to significantly improve performance.

At the costs involved though, you get better bang per buck by buying current generation components. I had the same board upgraded with the above-mentioned components and 2GB of CAS2 RAM. A budget AMD system at similar price, e.g. dual-core Phenom, 4GB DDR3, Radeon HD5750, will easily outperform it.

Cheers!
