I don't know if it helps, but if I recall correctly, the BIOS in A8V Deluxe has Fast Write enabled by default. Try disabling it.

If that doesn't help, we'll just continue trying to find the culprit. :p

what is PSU??

What's your power supply?

Also, is it running a new install of windows, or did you take out your old motherboard and use your same
Windows install?

I also think there's a problem with the NX bit if you're running sp1. You should be able to disable that in the bios somewhere.

Is XP's standby/hibernate/power save mode enabled? Maybe that's what's causing the BSOD.

CCHG,
You are not alone. Check the net, quite a few people have this problem. My experience is that it can happen even whilst looking at the bios settings, so it is nothing to do with drivers, power supply, fastwrite - I tried them all. I built 2 * s393 3500+ a8v deluxe wireless (ver1.2), TWINX1024-3200C2 . Both systems freeze with default settings. Sometimes after minutes, sometimes after many hours. By tweeking the memory timings over 4 days, this can be corrected. The machines have not frozen since I changed the settings, which I believe were (until I find my notes), tRAS and tRP. I raised a problem with asus support, and the response was basically wait for a new bios. Clearly 1008 is not the answer. Did you try the new beta 1009.002 (16-nov) which of course has no text notes, so we can only guess what it fixes.

I have 3000 on this board runs with no probs. Are you running memory in dual channel mode? If so what kind of memory is it. I think you should try to see if disableingsome of your powersaving options helps out also don't run any screensavers

Thanks for that info gumba. Looks like the 90nm socket 939's don't suffer from the same problem as the 130nm ones. As a precaution, I'll be avoiding 130nm till it's fixed. I would point out that freezing is a common problem with this motherboard and very few people have managed correct it. Those that have have adjusted the memory timings. Basically, I'm now waiting for Asus to issue a bios that names this problem as fixed. In the mean time, with Twinx1024-c3200C2 runnning dual channel, I managed to avoid all freezes with these settings based on the corsair recommendation for Asus a8v using this memory, and my changes marked *** - which were worked out after many days testing.

Dim Voltage set to 2.7 Volts:
CAS Latency CL=2.5
Row Cycle Time tRC Bios Default *** I had to use tRC 12
Row Refresh Cyc Time tRFC Bios Default
Ras# to CAS# delay tRCD 3
Row to Row delay Bios Default
Min Ras# Active Time tRAS 6 ( 10 recommended for 64 bit nvidea/via )
Row Precharge Time tRP 3
Write Recovery Time Bios Default
Write to Read delay Bios Default
Read to Write Delay Bios Default
Refresh Period tREF Bios Default
Enable 2T Timing AUTO
*** I also had to change to Asynclat 8

Remember my changes are for my memory and cpu. Other memory/cpu combnations will differ. Basically, in order to make this work for the 3500+ 130nm newcastle, I had to use tRC=12 and asynclat=8

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the fault as I raised it with Asus:
Note: this hang can even happen whilst just looking at the bios settings, so that rather excludes most
drivers as the problem.

I have 2 identical setups here, both brand new, and both systems have the same hanging problem.
This removes the CPUs as the potential source of the problem. Both A8V boards are rev 1.02.

The systems will hang, at infrequent intervals, mostly when idle. The mouse, keyboard and the power
switch are non responsive. If the screen saver has engaged when it freezes, the monitor too is
unable to come back on. The only option is the reset button. Sometimes, the freeze will happen whilst
I am examining the bios settings and before anything has booted. The freeze will especially happpen
when the system is completely idle. There have been no system crashes, no bsod, no entries in the
event logs. This is a minimal XP installation.

I have tried all the bios settings at default/automatic and also with changes like turning off the
advanced AGP options, and using AGP4. I have tried all three 1006 Bios - The original one on the
motherboard dated june, the release 1006 bios and the beta 1006.006. I have also cleared the
NVRAM before updating the bios.

I have also tried all the VIA chipset drivers, including the latest, I have tried all the ATI drivers,
including the latest ATI drivers. I have tried a 64MB Nvidia Geforce 4 MX440 with the latest drivers
and also a Radeon 9600XT 256MB, and a Radeon 9500, both with the latest drivers.

I have tried running the memory at 2.7V as well as the normal default settings. I have also tried 2
other matched pairs of the same twinx-1024c2 corsair memory. The memory sticks are in the 2 blue
sockets. I tried single channel memory and 1 stick as 512MB only

I have changed the Power supply to another Tagan 480W TG480-U01

In other words, there is nothing left untried except the motherboards

I must conclude that either this particular Motherboard needs new updated BIOS, or I have 2 faulty
boards.

Some advice please, perhaps memory timings for the corsair twinx1024-3200C2 that are tested and
known to work?

I have an Asus A8V Deluxe with an Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB or RAM (1 stick) and Radeon 9200SE. It has the Marvell Yukon network chip. I was running Suse 9.2 (Linux) it would lock up on network access. I found many others would were experiencing this and random lock ups. I never experienced random lockups. I switched to a PCI network card (D-link DFE-530TX) and disabled the on board nic. It works fine now.
I don't know if that helps.

Not sure if this problem is due to distributor, bad hardware or bad luck. Ordered a Asus8V and Athlon 64 3400 + combo for an upgrade over my Socket A. Excitedly I put the system together and booted. I received "Cpu Overclock" error message from Asus Post reporter. So I double checked Asus manual and it says hold "del" down to enter bios and correct this problem. Easy right ? Well holding "del" to no avail. Reboot and retry. I notice caps lock nor num lock will bring up little green light on my keyboard to show it has power. Known good working keyboard. I unplug and replug keyboard and notice green lights on the keyboard flash. Maybe it is an old keyboard. Borrow neighbor's keyboard. Same result. So I need to enter bios to fix problem but for some reason this motherboard doesn't seem to be allowing my keyboard to work so I can get into bios. Yes, I did check the kbrpwr jumper. Well let me try to flash the bios. Flash bios. Same result. Call Asus. Twice. Three times. Always get someone who says they will call me back when they get a chance. This was before Christmas. As of today I am still waiting. So I contact vendor and they send new motherboard out right away. Same result. So I order new processor and it gets here tonight. Same result. If anyone has any ideas I would be more than willing to try. I have built my last two comp's. I just can't understand in two different motherboards why I can not get into the bios when the manufacturer says I should be able too. Has anyone ever experienced similar problem ?:frown:

My guess would be a problem with your power supply, or possibly your memory. Is your memory rated for 400mhz? What kind of power supply do you have?

I have a generic power supply 300W and brand new PNY 3200 ddr ram. the power supply is working. Just keep getting that "Cpu is overclocked message" and unable to enter bios to correct that problem. I think that is the real problem, I can't get into the motherboard bios for anything. That is weird and I can not for the life of me get anyone to talk to me at Asus. "We'll take a message and get back to you." everyone I talk to is impressed with Asus reliability and support. I have an Asus socket a for the comp I am using right now but they just took a step down in my opinion. I shouldn't have to call all day everyday to get someone to call me back. Look either call me back or let me wait on hold for 20mins to talk to someone now ! oh well /rant off p.s. I do really like asus and think they are a good company otherwise I would not have bought their new board.

I just got this computer working today and got authorization to return my two s939 boards as well as both cpus so I am just not going to mess with it. I really wanted to upgrade but I guess if I wait a couple more years they will have this whole pci-e thing figured out by that time )
