Asus A8RMVP MB went bad, is the dc Opteron worth spending $ on for a new mb?

Is a dual core 939 socket opteron worth rebuilding a system around? I have the 165 version.
My Asus A8Rmvp board went bad. I have 1 gig of ram. Is that cpu worth spending another $100 on for a new motherboard? Or would I just be better off getting a new cpu and board for 200?

for $100 you could get a cpu and board lol. you could get a quad and board for less than $200 now with the athlon II x4 620 and your pick of sub $100 board. also, DDR2 just spiked to double price it was last summer, so make sure you compare vs DDR3 before buying it

I've got good news for ya, the Opty 165's are selling consistently for $50-$60 on Ebay. So that will recoup a decent bit of $ for the new buildout.

What are you trying to do with the system? Pretty much even the bargain-basement chips will run circles around that Opty 165 these days. If you don't do much : PhII X2/X3, E5xxx/e6xxx Intel, whatever.

Performance-wise, you would do better to sell the Opty (which still fetches a good price) and sell/donate the old DDR, and spend on CPU/mobo/RAM (perhaps you can find a hot-deal bundle?).

thanks guys. I am not sure how the mb died, but there is no power at all to anything. It is not the psu as I have tried many and it is not the case switch. It has to do with the southbridge. The southbridge gets blazingly hot even when turned off. I am thinking something shorted out.

That sucks man. I'm still rocking an A8R32-MVP deluxe and it runs great. It's not as fast as current systems with my Opty 170, but it works like a champ.. Never a problem.

I'm gonna probably get a Phenom dualcore soon... Game performance suffering thesedays.

I just looked at the chip. It looks like I have the good OCer.
Would this compare to a fx60 at oc speeds?
