Asus A8R-MPV and the ide

Hi Everyone I'm IanD I'm new here and alot stupid ... be gentle.

I just bought a Asus A8R-MPV with x800xt and sata drive.

Windows boots ok off the SATA with one of my four ide drives plugged in to one of the ide. But when I plug in the other IDE - drives to the Primary blue IDE connector the machine won't boot

- Can not find valid boot drive. - or something like that.

The ide drive(s) do not Windows on it. the SATA is setup to be the Boot . in the Bios.

So here are my two wishes are they possiable?

One just get the other drives working..
two get the info off both attached drive 200 gig and 180 gig (former xp Boot drive)
hopefully without pulling them from the system.

What should the drive jumpers be set to ? I think they are set to cable select ... ?

Check that both the ide drives are set to cables select, or to master and slave; DONT have one drive on cs.
