Asus A8N32 SLI Deluxe <-- Is the audio ok?

OK, I've settled on this board, but I've heard the audio is a bit outdated.

1. Is it, in fact, fine for most people or is it a real issue for playing cutting edge games and such? (Will be used with 2.1 Logitech speakers)

2. How much real benefit would I get from switching to a PCI card for audio? Peformance increase? Significant increase in fidelity?

3. Finally, any recommendations that aren't too expensive? (<$125)

(This board will be paired with an AMD 64 X2 4200+, 2GB RAM, and an eVGA 256MB 7800GT (470Mhz clock) )

Thanks,
Ran

Either Audigy2 or X-Fi will be leaps and bounds better than onboard. Plus it'll use up less cpu cycles.

Depends on your level of tolerance. I can hear the difference between onboard and add-on card audio. While an add-on audio card does reduce CPU load, for most gamers it won't reduce it enough to reallly matter.

I'm just wondering if Creative will ever come out with a Dolby Digital Live capable card...

thanks for the responses!

An Audigy 2 is pretty cheap nowadays (~$40). If I get one of these, what slot would you recommend putting it in? I only ask, because I recall that with my Gigabyte board that different PCI slots corresponded to different Resource channels which were shared with all the onboard devices........

I have the A8N32, the sound on it was alright, but nothing special.

I then bought myself an Audigy 2 ex (for the headphone socket). It's much better imo.

HOWEVER i have had issues with it and my DVDRW, inso much as when the card is in i can't play DVDs, they get spat out as "unrecognised format" it doesn't matter which slot i used. I don't know if there is a fix for the problem, but it's there.

Well, if you are running SLI you really only have one choice in placing the sound card from what I hear. Thats in the middle between the two video cards. The slot next to the second card from what I have seen pics of. For single vid card setup I would try to arrange it where you have an empty slot between it and the next card. That way you have ample airflow passage between all the cards.

Hmmm..good to know. the plan is to go SLI within 2 months, assuming prices on the X1900XT don't drop too significantly..... 🙂
