Asus A8N-VM CSM video and power up issues

I purchased this motherboard to revamp an HTPC I built a while back. I want to use the integrated video, rather than adding a video card to it for heat dissapation and noise reasons.

System specs:

Antec Aria case, 300 W PSU
A8N-VM CSM
AMD A64 3500+
2x512 MB of Patriot 2.5CL RAM
1 Maxtor SATA HD
1 Pioneer DVD Burner
Using onboard sound, video, and LAN

However, when I run the video output at 1280x768 to match a widescreen LCD TV, I get all sorts of artifacting and tearing. If the screen is static, with nothing moving or changing, it looks okay, but as soon as I open a window with any kind of action taking place (like a download dialog), the screen goes nuts.

This happens whether I use VGA or D-DVI connections. It seems to work fine on lower resolutions, but 1280x768 gives it fits. After doing some research, I've disabled Cool and Quiet in the BIOS, but the problem still occurs. I've also upgraded to the latest BIOS, but this hasn't helped either. I used the drivers provided on the disk and the latest from nVidia, neither seems to have an effect on this.

Any suggestions? I have a gig of memory in the machine, so there should be plenty for the graphics subsystem. For now, I've put an old 6800GT in there and it works fine, but I'm concerned about the heat and noise.

I also seem to be having a power up problem. My machine will only boot every other power on push. If I push the power button, the PSU starts up, the case lights up, but no video output and no HDD activity. Power off, then push the power on again, everything works fine. This is regardless of whether or not C&C is on or not.

I really want this board to work for me, I'm a big fan of both Asus and nVidia, but I really don't want to have to put a video card in this box and I certainly don't need this power up issue.

I was having similar issues with power on, reset and even exiting BIOS setup. It looked like the POST routine was not getting started when it should - power on, reset or getting out of BIOS setup would work but then POST did not run.

Problem started off "every other time" but after fiddling with power and boot settings in the BIOS I manged to make it every time - couldn't POST, couldn't boot.

Cleared CMOS and loaded default settings - POSTs everytime. (I have fiddlled with some BIOS settings since but left the power settings alone for now.)

Now I only have issues with no POST or boot for a restart of XP (Pro/SP2) - XP shuts down normally but the POST & boot don't happen until I use reset button.

What's the amp rating on your 12V rail for your power supply? A8N-VM CSM needs 15A minimum or it has issues booting up. I found out the hard way . . .

x-man:
what did you use for a case? The Aspire Q-Pack's power supply lists two 12V rails...one at 14A, the other at 16A. Curious if I need to swap a big spare Seasonic power supply in...

I haven't built my HTPC yet, but when I tried to boot the board up with my bench power supply it did not work. Thought I had a bad board but it worked with the big power supply in my rig.

I ordered a Silverstone ST40-F 400W power supply for my HTPC, along with a Silverstone LC10.
