ASUS A8N-SLI Premium weird temps

What a nice community this seems to be :) This is my first post and I apologize that I'm immediately looking for help, but it's kind of a last resort. I just built the system in my sig a few days ago, and both ASUS probe and the BIOS have been telling me that the CPU is idling around 40C...however, when I look at the sensor information inside of Everest Home Edition, it's saying anywhere between 31C and 34C. I'm running the latest non-beta BIOS from ASUS - 1005

So, my question is, is this normal? Which temp readouts should I be paying attention to? Maybe the different programs measure from different sensors? If anyone has any idea, I'd really appreciate some feedback.

Thanks!

Wow, ok. I've seen other people running their FX-55's at around 30...maybe they weren't using the stock cooler? I'm using the stock cooler and AS5 as thermal paste. Is there a special way to mount the cooler that I don't know about?

Don't think so...there's a right way and a wrong way ;)

1. Your BIOS may be inaccurate, but it's highly unlikely that your probe is wrong. Make sure you applied the AS5 correctly, and remember that it takes at least a week for it to settle in nicely.

2. Maybe you want a better HSF...it's usually not good for AMD processors to idle above 40C. Look at Thermalright's XP-90 or Zalman's CNPS7000 or CNPS7700 series. :)

Welcome!!!

I also have the Asus A8N-SLI Premium. Looking at my sensors, I'm reading 39c @ 3/4 load on bios and probe for my cpu and 37c for motherboard(yes it's warm here). I'm also using a XP-120 so if I was using the stock hsf I would probably around 40c at idle. Note, both your bios and the asus probe will read the same as they're configured to read the same sensor; bona fide doesn't know what he's talking about.

Now, Everest is designed to have to read from the many different sensors that different motherboards use. Thus, it's most likely the least accurate, especially with the Premium being a new board. Using Everest on my system, it's fluctuating between 36c and 40c. Close. If I run Speedfan, it reads the same as my bios and probe.

Things to check, what is your motherboard temp reading between bios/probe and Everest? Obviously, if they're reading differently than Everest is reading your temps wrong. Also, try running Speedfan as another check.

At idle, 40c isn't an issue. Your concern should be at load and if it runs over 60c then you may want to try and reseat your hsf.

Thanks for the quick responses! Much appreciated!!

So 40C for an FX-55 on stock cooling is normal? If that's the case, I'm totally ok with that, I just want to make sure that I'm running at all of the correct temps that I'm supposed to. I'm kind of new at all of this...this is my second real box, so I'm still learning :)

I've reseated my HSF and cleaned and re-applied AS5 and still no change in temps, so I guess that is.......the.....right.......temp? :)

My motherboard temp is right around 35C...and I'm in Southern California, in Riverside to be exact, so it's really warm here, if I had to guess, I'd say, with the AC on, 80 degrees in my room, maybe?

Considering that your room temp's about 26.67 C, your mobo temp is OK. For example, my room temp right now is about 17 C, and my mobo (ASUS A8N-SLI) temp is about 29 C, and all's good :)

So maybe I should invest in a new CPU cooler? I hear the ginormous thermalright heatpipe monstrousity is good...something worth buying in conjunction with a quiet fan?

I thought that the FX-55 comes with heatpipe cooling -- anyways, my CPU temp's about 34 C, and I've noticed that my CPU temp's usually about 5 C over the mobo's temp, so if your CPU temp's about 40 C, then your CPU and mobo are running fine.

So then, I suppose getting a new heatpipe type CPU cooler wouldn't hurt, except maybe your "hip pocket" :)

Just put in my order for the P-180, so hopefully that will bring temps down somewhat...thank you all for your input! :)

Question for ya Cap...

The probe you metion is one of those wires that have a sensor at the end and it plugs into the mb or is attached to a case front panel. I have a couple of these on my P160 and I am just wondering where you would connect this to get readings from your cpu? Do you put it underneath the mb socket? or between HS and CPU? I would like to be able to better monitor it before I start OCing and a secondary source for the readings sounds good. Also do you know of any reason why I would plug one of these probes into the MB vs. using the ones on case. I seem to remember the premium board having a connection for a temp sensor but can't seem to find it in the manual ATM. I have an extra one of these sensors lying around, should I just go with one on the P160 or hook another one up to the MB?

Thanks in Advance!

I hope you have better luck with it than i'm having. I have only had my P180 a few days but so far it is MUCH warmer than my LianLi V1000. My idle temps are nearly 10c warmer. I'm playing around with the fan arrangement inside to see if i can get it down some... the fans themselves don't seem very powerful so i may invest in some panaflo 120's.

nice to see other A8N-SLI Premium owners out there. your mobo temps are about where mine are hovering at. my system is rock solid too with overclocking. check out my sig. personally, i love this board. haven't had any issues yet.

Alright, excellent! Glad to see at least some of my temps are normal. I'm waiting for my P-180 to get here, and I've been doing a ton of reading on cabling it correctly...and I'm hoping my Powerstream's cables can reach all of the places they need to. Stupid, efficient, non form-factor case design. :)

Well, an update. When I went to turn on my comp this morning, it turned on just fine, fans spinning and lights blinkingm but no POST or voice messages of any kind. After a few hours of troubleshooting, I decided to just RMA both the CPU and the motherboard :'( Stupid expensive hobby. However, this WILL give me time to wait on my P-180 and then have a shiny new A8N-SLI Premium to put into the case. I'll report back with how the rig turns out, hopefully with some pictures.

My temps are at 33C for the CPI and 34C-35C for the MB at idle. At full load CPU jumps to 44C and MB goes to 38C. Thermalright XP-90 with a 100+CFM Delta Fan.

BTW, I'm not able to get Speedfan to work, I can't get it to lower fan speeds at all. That delta is a bit loud and I'd like it quieter when I don't need it pushing all that air
